This morning. Out in the hay meadow. Nice fat 5x4. I had fun watching and spotting for him.
Used old M1917 sporter in .300 H&H.
No cows this morning. They were all waaaaay up on north end. Glassed them and watched them. Believe I know where they went. I will try here in a little while to see if I can connect with one.
Solid work on the spotter, KW!
And congrats to your son for dumping a nice bull.
🦫
Thanks fellas. Im back out. Hoping for a cow.
Congratulations and good luck!
Nice! Congratulations to both of you!
Would love to see a picture of that rifle. Many have been sporterized back in the day. Grinding down those rabbit ears was the start to slimming down the action. I had one many years ago. It was made by Winchester.
Bob, tell your Son Congrats, and good luck to you. miles
Sweet! I hope the herd cooperates for you soon.
Congratulations on that fine bull kaywoodie !
My favorite hunting rifle is my BSA Sporterized 1917 in .30-06, gotta love hunting with a hundred plus-year-old rifle that is deadly accurate and drops critters in their tracks hey?
Good luck with your cow tag :o)
Cheers ~
Went out this morning. Saw same herd I saw last night.
And saw one bad azz 7x6!!! Definitely 300+ critter.
Nice bull in a "nice" location for access!
Nice job out there, KW! Nothing like some Grand County elk in the freezer. Been too many years for me!
Congrats to your boy on the bull!
Nice job and congrats to him and good luck to you!
And, taken with a Classic old military rifle conversion from back in the day.
Good bull there, waaaaay over bore/kill though!!! 😂
Congrats to OS, KW, you get that cow and the Larder will be busting at the seams.
Congrats to OS on a fine bull. Likewise on the 300 H&H.

Have you killed your cow elk yet?
Not yet Ken. Saw nothing last night.
How much longer till the elk season ends?

Sunday Ken,
Someone was asking about his rifle. Here it is. Classy old sporter job probably from the 50’s.

Congrats to OS! What are you carrying this year KW? 1895 of some sort?
Congrats to your son on his Bull. The old John Deere does sure make for a great recovery.

Congratulations to your son, Bob. Hope you score a fat young cow in the next day or two.

KillerBee,
That rifle was built by J F "Buster" Kreuz of Austin Tx. Probably when he was down at 408 Brazos. I knew him very well. His older brother was my adopted grandfather. I doubt he did the stockwork but he did all the metal work. The original barrel ( stamped JF Kreuz, Austin Tx) was 24" and was showing some good throat erosion. Son picked up this old Douglas 26" bbl and had it replaced. Worked out great.
Congratulations to your son, Bob. Hope you score a fat young cow in the next day or two.
Thanks Neal. All I saw tonight was a mulie doe and a big azz moose!🤣
You are getting it done, KW! Snow? Someone mentioned Grand County - Colorado? Jeez it was 70* here in the Twin Cities area yesterday. Same today..... Ok, waiting for that fat cow pic!

Plenty of time to get your cow elk.
Sweet looking elk killing rifle, KW!
19 this morning. Saw one raghorn bull and three coyotes. Try again later! 😊
Congratulations to your son on the elk! Imagine that, a rifle that doesn't have any plastic on it and the old outdated .30 Government '06 killing an elk! Hope you get one with the 1895!
Kaywoodie, loved the pic of the 95. Can hear the short barrel whiners crying and crapping their pants from here. You the man...mb
No word from Bob to tonight.
Hope that means he’s busy butchering one.
Didn’t see a thing tonight. Im beat. Going to bed early
Guess I should have opted for a bull tag instead. Dang 10 bulls (8 legal, one big 6x6)right out in front of me this morning! 🤣🤣🤣🤣. They were great to watch. Several sparing with each other. Really cool to see!
Have you killed your cow elk yet, KW?
Nuthin’! Waiting for the storm to pass thru and this evening. St. Hubertus will not fail me!!
( reenactment of Napoleon’s retreat from Russia! 🤣)
Are you on the retreating side Kaywoodie?
ie. the retreat(ie)?

Peur-être ????🤣🤣🤣🤣
To Hell with this alleged storm. I am going out!
Did you get your cow elk yet, KW?
Nope. We are about 10 miles from the house. Drove back all night. Hunted yesterday morning saw nothing. Found the herd down by the highway after we left ranch! 🤣
Guess I could go back later. My tag is good til January.
Darn!
Are you going back?
Got this photo a moment ago from bud that was with us. It was taken this morning. This is location where old son got his bull last Saturday. I hunted the treeline out of pic to right several times🤣
WOW that is a pile of elk! You guys in Colorado are blessed to have so many elk.
Alberta is 255,541 sq. miles total land mass, with a population of 26,000 elk.
Colorado is 104,185 sq. miles total land mass with 290,000 elk.
Hope you get a big fat cow :o)
Enjoyed the story Kaywoodie. My typical elk success runs like that, with moose sightings outnumbering elk. But sounds like you actually were in a lot of elk the whole time. Hope you can make a return trip.
Those Grand Lake area elk sure have gotten schooled at running the gauntlet up there. Pretty incredible how fast that herd can be in RMNP, should they feel the need!
