Wichita Mountains NWR in southwest Oklahoma a week ago today.
Dang Quinton, you boys slay some bigguns!
Mark, We just get lucky now and then! What makes them all really cool is that all of the bulls except 2 of them are Colorado OTC bulls. The other 2 are Colorado bulls but from 61 and from down around Trinadad.
hoping a pic shows up. cow elk i killed north of durango, co last month.

ingwe man you get to hunt bull elk a lot all realy nice bulls congrats
My good friend, Al Klassen's bull fron the Yukon he killed this past fall...bugled in and shot with a .270 at 25 yards...
Ingwe - I have been waiting for the chance to tell you this, "You suck!"
Great collection of bulls you and others have.
If I suck...then you and your crew
REALLY sucks!!
......nice bulls!
I think you are working for them, and shooting the big ones on purpose!!
I shot all of mine simply because they were wearing my favorite meat!! Antlers were a bonus!!!
Yeah....you suck...
Ingwe
hey bigfin were did you get the bulls at what state
hey bigfin were did you get the bulls at what state
In the order they appear:
MT
MT
NV
AZ
MT
here's my first bull and a deer I'd shot a couple weeks prior.
My first archery elk:
here's the most recent, about a month ago..
Kurt....
You really suck...
Beat me to it!!
Ingwe
I'd love to take one like this guy.. took this photo during the late hunt a few years ago, didn't know anybody with a permit though.
one of my favorite elk hunting photos.. called him in and arrowed him at 10 yards, stopped him, got him again at 25, both shots were bullseyes.
<-- wants to hang out with Greenhorn in October.
This was a fun one, my best friend's first elk.
this one dropped, by an arrow at a steep angle. It deflected off a rib and broke it's back.
Electric Peak in the background and no we weren't in the park. Last hour of a 4 day late hunt. The guy with the gun was going to quit after the 3rd day but I talked him into going one more time.
Yep...you suck...
Big Time!
Now I know why I killed so few big bulls...YOU got the rest of them!!!
Ingwe
this was a fun day, but a lot of work..
Wow.....
Really nice bulls...all of them....
I have shot my share....and I know they don't come easy....
Good on 'ya!
Ingwe
thanks.. fun bringing all them back up. Here's a campsite from 2 years ago..
and a big wallow..
a buddy shooting lunch during the afternoon..
this was a neat photo, early AM archery hunt in 95.
The worst part of that ordeal was a 1.3 mile (by GPS) section that was steeply downhill. It took us SIX HOURS to cover that. We were loaded down with meat, soaked to the bone, delusional tired and the route we took through there couldn't have been worse, cliff gullies, deadfall, frozen ground and deep wet snow.
160lbs of meat on a $9.99 torpedo. Thanks for that idea, Brad!
Greenhorn - you're my new hero - HOLY SHIITE!
Are those all public land bulls? Not that it matters............
That last one doesn't even sound remotely fun, glad you made it out. Sometimes looking at your progress on the GPS can be pretty depressing.
Dad's awfully proud so I need to post this pic from Saturday. Hopefully it is the first of many. It's the first animal he's ever killed. If it had been allowed it could have been a bull or just about any other flavor of elk you'd like since it was in a herd of about 200. This one was just perfect because we could pack the meat out in one trip. We didn't tell the elk it was shot with a .243 so it fell over dead without any problems.
bwinters, there's a couple photos of bulls taken on private land, but almost all of them were public.
CCH - Great photo and way to get a youngster started!
Helped this fine lady in the taking of her first bull.....she put a great shot on this guy with her .270 at 275 yards..
We scored this bull by scratching the numbers into a rock....370+
My friend Mike's first bull....huge body. Shot with a .300wm @ 300 yards.
A couple bulls we took a few days apart back in 2007...
I've got a serious question for Pat and Kurt...
How many hours a year do you guys log in the field scouting?? Its obvious that you've both "figured something out" with both Mulies and Elk.
Small bull, small rifle...was out coyote hunting and ran into this bull. Shot was from the black ridge behind me with a .220 swift.
Dan, couldnt say in hours....probably more in terms of weeks and months!
You work out-doors, correct??
Kurt? You must be a scaler or logger?
I kind of figured that was the reason you two are consistantly successful on good'uns. Time in field...
Small one I coaxed in with a bugle....back when that used to work......grin! State of the art camo!!!
Redneck camo...
Nice bull there Pat!
Lots of nice elk in this thread aint there.
Dober
Nice heavy bull from 2008..
This Greenhorn fella, he kills some bulls!
Hard earned bull from a few years back....my knees have never been the same after packing out this one.
I've got a serious question for Pat and Kurt...
How many hours a year do you guys log in the field scouting?? Its obvious that you've both "figured something out" with both Mulies and Elk.
Dan-I won't try to answer for Kurt and Pat but I can tell you that I've been a bit passionate about taking good bruins and from my time with that, I think that people would be amazed if they truly knew the amount of time effort and money that goes into getting things done like these guys do.
Many guys talk about getting it done, many guys can talk the ballistic gack and such these guys can do that plus they get out there and really get after it!
Definately another world of commitment.
Dober
That's a great pic Pat!
Dober
Bulls on the hoof....
Thanks Mark....obvious to see I've got cabin fever!! And you?
Big time, took a beating from the yotes on Sat. Saw nine, got one...as Ingwe would say I suck...grin
But hey, it's only 114 days to spring bruins..
Dober
My best bull....held up by my son Sean...2004
Small bull, small rifle...was out coyote hunting and ran into this bull. Shot was from the black ridge behind me with a .220 swift.
Dan, couldnt say in hours....probably more in terms of weeks and months!
And on other places on this same website folks want to debate the use of centerfire .22 on pronghorn or deer!
Great bulls, SS and Greenhorn, thanks for sharing.
PS- Can you guys actually feel others envy?
Here's a really neat 7X7 with "Crown" points....killed by my good friend Owen in the breaks in 2007..
From the achives....my friend Dave with a bull he shot in Park County, Montana back in the day.
What a bullfest! Great photos and animals!
Dan, I'm not a logger unless you count cutting down a Christmas tree in the winter. I work in an office. I don't scout nearly as much as I used to.
I've got a serious question for Pat and Kurt...
How many hours a year do you guys log in the field scouting?? Its obvious that you've both "figured something out" with both Mulies and Elk.
Good question - was thinking the same thing. Was also wondering A. how far back in, B. does backpacking/spike camp play into the equation.
Kurt, you and I are just "flatlanders"......grin!!
Flatlander...way out of my element...laffin!
Growing up I'd get lost if I couldn't see the Froid elevators, it's even worse in the mtns.. Thankfully I pack a GPS, spare batteries, and a big buck knife in my fanny pack now.
My 8 year old was laughing his butt off while taking that photo.
We were hunting bighorn sheep..
The old VE25 I've owned since 1978...has served me well in most of the western states as well as Alaska, The Yukon, The NWT,....I even use it out on the "Flats".
I've a bibler (top) and Hillberg (bottom)
But I'd like to upgrade to this:
and some of these..
Lets go RV'n!!
The Northface Hilton in the NWT....Jim is lickin his chops...thats a Dall sheep backstrap over those coals...wouldnt mind having a couple hundred pounds of that in the freezer....( in zip-locks).....grin!!
Here's a neat shot of my best archery bull, just after boning and putting in pillow cases and before sneaking it off of Ted Turner's ranch.
Notice the arrow hole in the heart. The purple pillow cases are from K-Mart, I believe the "Martha Stuart Collection" of linens.. this is the step just prior to putting them into ziplock sandwich bags.
Here's one in my truck whole - it can happen, but comes with a price (not one I'll be able to afford)..
Her name was peaches I think.. NM archery hunt '99. We went 4 for 4 in 4 days. tounge-twister.
pat, you know these guys.
The guy who took the largest on that hunt returned to NM again this year in a fairly easy to draw unit, that isn't well known for big bulls..
he's had good luck in MT too.
2001 archery MT, public land
2003 MT rifle, public land
This is where his bull ended up this year.. wrapped around a tree after a little sliding down the mtn. He made a good shot at 600 yards.
Rumor has it that you outwalked the horses on that hunt to New Mexico.....grin! They sure are nice for packing meat!!
This one came off the mountain in zip-loc bags.....
But I'd like to upgrade to this:
and some of these..
Not really sure those mules are going to be able to take that trailer were you want to go.
Thank you Scenarshooter and Greenhorn for all your pics in this post. You guys know a thing or 2 about getting into elk I'd say:) And from looking at some of your pictures, you are working for them because some of that stuff looks pretty steep & deep!!
Really enjoy your posts - this one is almost as good as your mule deer pictures - thanks again!!
Congrats to all of you also - but I'd have to say looks like Montana still has a couple nice elk. Lucky
Regarding the references to flatlanders and Ziplocs...
It's nice to see the appreciative acknowledgments of these two hunters, or any hunters for that matter, impressive feats, rather than the venomous jealousy spewed by a certain gnome who couldn't handle not being able to "top it."
I think several of us "flatlanders" pulled the plug after that particular drunken tirade.
If all my good stuff wasn't 35mm and unscannable I'd post 'em...give or take...
381" B&C
But I'd like to upgrade to this:
You sure that will fit in your fanny pack?
383" P&Y
Thanks for that nice compliment WT!
Kurt, gotta love the pics of the "crew"....here's my seven year old with a 13 pounder....
345" P&Y
Great pics guys and thanks for sharing.
I admire your success and envy your ball-bustin' hard-work ethic when it comes to hunting. There must have been some blood, sweat, and tears involved in finding, killing, and packing out some of those bulls.
You should have seen the ones that 'got away'! Hahaha...
I'll post more pics later... gotta get more either on my website or my Photobucket page.
Take care!
Great old fighter bull WBH!!
I know its not an elk antler but I had to throw this in...Logan when he was six holding his best mule deer antler...oops there's a fence in there...grin!

Great pic! He looks like one happy boy!
Insane bulls taken here by you guys! I hope one day to be as fortunate as you have, and share a hunt with a kid that I don't have yet
. Congrats
Great elk WBH! Good to see so many MT animals. ALso nice to be able to post a pic of your kids, wife, etc, without the insults.
Hi Greenhorn! Yes, it seems like good ol'MT is well represented in this thread.
I'll post more later.
Take care.
Matched set of 340's.....
Pretty good bunch of bulls from a couple years ago....
Glassing for elk couple years ago in the Gallatin National Forest.. 2.5 hour hike, much off-trail, saw one elk, a small 6X6. Swaro - Kraut for Tasco.
Pic taken in summer of 2004...the bull on the left I killed opening day of rifle....found his sheds from the year before. The bull on the right I found one shed from him...he was killed in 2005 and grossed 385 with a final score of 376 B&C.
Some great elk photos, guys! I've got some raw video footage that I need to upload and see about posting...
This one is a poor quality photo... low light and from a cell phone cam! This was the last bull killed this season... a freaky guy with perfect 8 points on one side but something of a 'rat's nest' on the other. LOL
GH and SS, great shots as usual.
You guys are sure masters in the elk hunting and photography departments, even if ya'll do leave some air in the ziploc bags.... : )
Glad ya'll are over here.....

saddlesore - fine-looking mules you have sir.
Yes it is. We saw some cows and that was about it. Found all kinds of sign but couldn't connect on a bull.
The first bull I ever shot
Elk Camp, we pack it all in on horses.

Bill N .Looks like you are in the old burn area.
Hunted the Castles a lot through the late 80's and early 90's. Both North and South castle basins. Great country.
lefty C
Saddlesore, good looking mules you have. Thanks for sharing those picures.
The Castles are a beautiful place to hunt. Our next hunt there will involve mules for sure.
I think it will go over 400 and leave plenty of change. Impressive.
I didn't get to see this guy in person, as did my brother and another guide, but on the vid he sure looks huge compared to another bull that I did see (is now hanging on a wall--345" P&Y). When you compare these two bulls on the video, the 345" bull looks like a raghorn. My brother estimated this massive old bull to be near 415" - 420" gross, but he was never arrowed...
Thats a giant....about as big as they get....pick up his sheds and kill him next fall!!
Thats a giant....about as big as they get....pick up his sheds and kill him next fall!!
Upon talking with my brother this morning, he said that sheds from that bull have been found in the past, and most recently found on the neighboring ranch and 'mounted up'... score on those last sheds found (with spread credit not necessarily 100% accurate, of course) was a gross of 435" using the B&C system. So, yep, a big fella indeed!
This fella in the pic below went just over 380"... if I recall correctly. Not a pretty pic... sorry 'bout that.
this is me tuesday in colorado.
flew back to MN yesterday
I sure miss home! but I have a ton of meat for winter
That's a nice healthy looking cow, Colorado1135. I actually grew up not too far from Crookston, MN... it's a bit colder and flatter than Colorado.
yes sir it is, where did you grow up?
Red River Valley ... Ulen-Hitterdal/Hawley area... east of Fargo/Moorhead. The family moved out to Montana when I was in my early teens.
I grew up on silver lake, I'm sure you heard of it
moved to colorado in 2001 after high school and 2 years of college. back now after a stint in the navy
Yep... I know Silver Lake well. Most of my extended family still lives back in that general area.
I must have forgot to post on this thread!
Some GREAT looking elk on this thread and some pics that just make a guy go nuts waiting to hunt elk!!!
Here is my bull from 2008. Biggest bull and shot out on the prairies. Hoping my wife draws a tag in the same area in 2010!!!
Heres another bull we photographed 2 days before he was shot in 2009....he grossed 380".
That's a beautiful bull, Rackmastr.
Some great elk, and awesome looking elk country as well.
Here is my dad's bull from 2008.
And mine from the same morning.
As much fun as you can have....and keep your pants on.
Field dentistry...
I gotta contribute something.

You have stacked up some fine elk yourself....and I want to hunt with Greenhorn sometime!
You bet!

Here's me in Southern B.C., September of '08. 6x5 that fell to a 165 grain Interbond from the woefully inadequate .30-'06.
Here's my guide. I wish he'd have told me to bring a cowboy hat for photos.
FC
Gee, thats too bad, think of how nice of a bull you could have gotten with an adequate cartridge.....
Dat one looks like a good one to me!!
Anddddd...lots of cowboys wear ball caps elk hunting...
Ingwe
Wow! HuntKY.. that's a superb trophy elk! and a unicorn bull no less..
DIY Selway A tag, Unit 17.
Heres Dads bull, a 6x7 shot in the selway at 500 yards with a 270 weatherby mag.
My bull, shot at 60 yards 7mm08. Mine was shot 4 days before my dads about 500 yards apart at the same elevation, temp was 60 degrees when I shot mine, it was 20 when he shot his.
Picture taken after a 3,500 vertical foot climb, a few days of this and I was whupped. That trip was the last time I hunted Idaho, I hunted for 7 days and saw 3 fresh elk tracks, wolves on the other hand were everywhere.
These sheep are laying just inside the shadow line and below the pines in the above picture.
