I was just reading about 223 loads using IMR4895 powder. From the age of about 12 to 17 I shot a whole bunch of matches for two weeks every August. My dad was there representing Frankford Arsenal as they supplied all the '06 ammo so I take it that you had to shoot the 'standard' ammo?? Is this right? I seem to recall in some matches like the Wimbleton you could use any caliber but I'm not sure

Does any one know what type of powder was used for these matches? Was it IMR 4895? Lake City Arsenal later supplied ammo but why this changed is a mystery to me. I do a little reloading for various calibers and have use 4895 a great deal.
4895 produces too much pressure in the 223 the times I tried to use it. Never did get it to work right in 223.

Someone will have to give the powder data but I know 4895 was one of those at one time, IE at least that burn rate, if not exactly 4895...

If you are wanting to know calibers, CMP or the old DCM matches requires service rifle only, these days thats allowed 223/308/30-06 only.

The long range matches like the Wimbelton, could vary but you could enter as service rifle, and be limited but also run any caliber(IIRC) up to 338 and no muzzle brakes.

The NRA matches the following week also allowed other calibers...
