What Brand of 7.62x39 Non Corrosive Ammo has the best Reputation for Function and Accuracy..
I’m starting to see some available so now maybe a good time to purchase before the Bi Mental and his Merry Band Spooks the Proletariat..
Posted By: Certifiable Re: 7.62x39 Ammo - 06/14/21
If you mean between the more common import steel case offerings.. I don’t think there’s a huge amount of difference so I’d get what you can..

Only thing I have noted is Tula seems to be very dirty and slightly less accurate. I don’t require much from this type of ammo so if the price and availability was right I wouldnt pass it up

Tula is not consistent .. Squibs.. Is Red Army any good.. Brown Bear… Golden Tiger..
Thanks

Polish Variant ...

In my limited experience, accuracy varies from gun to gun, and ammo to ammo.

I set my expectations at about 3.0 MOA, and I'm not disappointed too often.

Here are some 100-yard targets with Tula, and Golden Tiger, from a couple different rifles.

I like the Golden Tiger. Lacquered case, sealed bullet, sealed primer. 124gr boat tail has a little better BC than the 122/123gr flat base.

Bottom line, it's not precision ammo. Get what you can at a reasonable price and enjoy.

Absolutely ... GT is hard to find ... The Tula has ED issues .. Spreads on Velocity not good..
Any input on the other Ammo out thar..
Thanks

I personally like wolf

On thing I found with my Mini 30 wolf fires every time
Tula I think has a bit harder primers and once in a while I get some that will not fire seems the primers need a harder strike

Of the steel case Barnaul.
Posted By: rickt300 Re: 7.62x39 Ammo - 06/16/21
I have used a bunch of Monarch with good results. The paradox with the 7.62x39 is cheap steel cased ammo and relatively expensive hunting ammo.
Posted By: doubleDs55 Re: 7.62x39 Ammo - 06/16/21
Buy several of what you can get try em out, buy more of what works and don't discount Tula, they make a Range Friendly bullet now, but I wouldn't buy cases yet because ammo is creeping back on shelves.
You'll pay twice as much now as you will later on.

Exactly 2D but supply isn’t there yet to buy a Sampler Platter..
Do you have something other than Tula as a Favorite..
Thanks

I can get Tula that's the point, for what I need em for they work great.
You seem to be looking, look away.

I'm not too picky about which steel case ammo I buy, as long as it's non-corrosive.

For something better, I did get set up to handload some Hornady 155gr ELD-M. I need to get back on that horse and finish that project up.

From the 20" barrel, 2230 fps or so is realistic, with a decent BC 155gr.

I've never had an issue with Tula Ammo but I'm still shooting old stock. Can't speak for new production.

That's probably a better hunting bullet for the x39.

My choice was to keep it supersonic further out, and the 155gr ELD-M at 2200 fps holds 1300 fps/500+ ft-lbs at 700 yards, while staying on the ACSS reticle in the 3X optic. A steel/rock shooter.

All I shoot hogs with in my .308 is Tula 165gr soft points.

Accurate. Clean. Reliable.

Got a bunch of Silver Bear Barnaul soft points in 7.62x39 that's dirtier, less accurate, and requires more chamber, bore cleaning than Tula, but it's still acceptable.
Posted By: doubleDs55 Re: 7.62x39 Ammo - 06/18/21
Same deal, in my bolt action 308's the Tula SP's shoot great, they expand nice on deer, cheap, expands, shoots inside 2".

I'm surprised no one has mentioned this stuff. I've seen it on the shelves at the LGS for a few months now:

At $14/box, it isn't going to break the bank trying it out.

Supposed to be reloadable and non corrosive. Should shoot well enough in my SKS. That rifle shoots steel cased wolf like this, so I will have a good baseline for an accuracy comparison:
[Linked Image from i.imgur.com]

I'm not going to say it shoots 2 moa or anything, but it does well enough for an iron sighted military rifle that never has a hiccup of any kind.

Brass cased Prvi Partisian "soft points" from Midway @ $14 shoot great, and if you got to have brass Midway has Prvi FMJ for less.
PPU is pretty good stuff at least it works for me if I was in the mood for brass instead of steel. But I don't really feel the need for brass in X39
That way I don't have to look for the cases either in the grass and soybean fields. Ashes to ashes deal.
Posted By: antelope_sniper Re: 7.62x39 Ammo - 06/19/21
BSA,
That looks like some nice ammo. I could use some more 7.62x39 cases, and I don't mind supporting the Serbian arms makers. I just wish they would sell us more primers right now.
Posted By: bsa1917hunter Re: 7.62x39 Ammo - 06/20/21
I agree buddy. I shot a box of it today, but daylight was fading. Seemed to shoot good, no failures. Loaded a little hotter than the Wolf steel cased stuff I generally shoot. I'm about ready to pop some primers out and make sure there is only one flash hole. I'll let you know. For $14/box, it seems reasonable. No shipping costs either, but if you can't find it locally, maybe the PPU stuff at midway may be your huckleberry. But for me, it would be a waste of money because of shipping costs.. LGS is a much better deal..

Here's a vid on the stuff:

Cheapest I found online is $11/box or $268/480 rounds..

How does it compare in price to the Wolf hp? Accuracy comparison? Nice pic though..

Primers seated very nicely. Now when I do some load work for my SKS I'll find out what kind of neck tension and accuracy these produce...Plus the longevity of the cases. I totally agree with the person that said the steel cased stuff is nice because you don't have to go chasing after it. However, it will be interesting to see how accurate my SKS is with this brass cased stuff and the cartridge specific bullets I bought for it..

Barnaul's photo. When I was buying it they both were so cheap I didn't know which was the more expensive. I did find the Barnaul Hollow point shot just a little closer out of an AK. But the Wolf FMJ has the 5.45 type airspace in the nose to make it tumble in
stuff denser than air.

I hear that. Now it's kind of expensive. I was at a shop a few months ago and found some Wolf steel cased stuff like what I run and it was $18.00/box of 20. I thought, holy fu, I have 2,500 rounds at the house. Maybe I better not shoot it all up in one place!! Then I got down on my hands and knees and looked at the way back of the bottom shelf and found a box of bullets for my new 6x45:

I don't think they even knew those bullets were down there. Shoot pretty good in my rifle too:

It has many uses
Of course those on the thread see it,the value
I am talking in general

I shoot more of this out of my AR than 556 or 223 for sure

My palmetto AR loves the tula 122 hp stuff. It shoots 1.5 moa with it.

I like the on game performance of the Barnal 125g SP. The soft point stuff expands nice and holds together.

I wish I would have bought a few cases of that back when it was $7/box. I just missed it several times at target sports a few years ago. It seemed to sell out fast then. I guess the hog hunters down south use a lot of it.

If I may jump into this thread, I plan to sell my 7.62x39 loading stuff. Redding die set, several boxes of bullets - including hunting type, lightly used brass, maybe some new. Also ammo, S&B, some Chinese. Can't get the Chinese stuff anymore, but in my experience it performed better than other imports, including accuracy.

PM if interested.

Back when I got my Russian SKS in the emid-90's, I also bought 1000 WW cases and at least 1000 WW 123 grain soft points. I found a decent load (don't remember what it was) and loaded up a few hundred. As it is, I haven't shot them all up yet. Thinking lately I wouldn't mind getting a small bolt gun or AR to play with in this caliber.

I have always shot Barnaul out of my Ruger Mini 30.... 122gr - 123gr and 124gr HP's. Brother-in-law and I hunted up-sate NY deer hunting. Never had a failure and the deer never ran very far.
