My main interest lately has been single shot rifles,
No. 1's mainly, and I have a "thing" for the oldies.

I'd appreciate the group think to put togeter a list,
not necessarily of factory chamberings in a particular rifle,
but ones that would be a cool choice in a No.1, custom or
otherwise. Mainly thinking medium to small bore rimmed bottlenecks, but hey -
list the belted mags and elephant stompers too if you'd like.
This is just for the joy of collecting and shooting. As far as
stuff to hunt with, already got that pretty well covered.

Off the top of my head, I'm aware of 303 Brit, 300 H&H,
9.3x74R, what else ya got?
I think I might want a 22 Savage Hi Power, but the lack of
bullet choices puts me off a bit.

257 roberts. 7x57 mauser, 6.5x55 Swede, 218 Bee, 250-300 Savage
45-70, 35 Whelen 357 mag 375 H&H
Just to name a few out there.
adding as I think of 'em. 7x65R 8x57 22 hornet 225 winchester
25-35 38-55 30-40 Krag 30-30 winchester 32 winchester special
348 winchester 219 Zipper/Donaldson Wasp

a bee or zipper might satisfy my 22 hi power "want" with
more bullet variety?

I know I'm leaving out a slew of the combo rifle/pistol
cartridges too, 32-20, 38-40, 44-40 etc.
.405 win.
How about a nice .416 rigby .
225 Win.

+1 on the 348 Win. That would be sweet.

Not an oldie but I'd also like to have one done in a 338-06.

Posted By: DMc Re: List of nostalgic calibers - 03/03/11
Maybe these are on Ruger's "to do" list. At least I hope so.
35 Remington
300 Savage
Posted By: Hogeye Re: List of nostalgic calibers - 03/03/11
A .17 Bee would be different. Or even a .32-20.
Yep, 416 Rigby is a "someday" thought for sure.

Gewehrfreund, that 8.15x46R threw me a loop, I had to do
a little research to find that one!

How about a 404 Jeffrey and a 7.62 X 54R Russian. In nothing heavier than a #1S. Those would be fun. And I'll take a 348 too. Mike
I was looking at a 7.62 Russian in my cartridge collection
while ago and wondering if that would fit in this group.
Works for me grin

6mm Lee Navy, 25 Remington,256 Winchester Mag, 256 Newton. Just some that thought about trying.
6.5mm rem mag.
257 wby mag
340 wby mag
50 alaskan
221 Fireball or 225 win
The Fireball would be fun. I will also vote for the .348.

The .327 Federal mag (even though that's not really nostalgic)

.30 carbine?

.44 mag

.375 Winchester
Yep, 375 would be useful. Has anybody mentioned 444 Marlin?
That would be nice.

30 carbine... dang, at the risk of being lynched by the
carbine guys, I just can't warm up to. Had a Ruger Blackhawk
in that years ago, never did care for it. But ok for the
list smile

I have no personal experience but have heard stories of exceptional accuracy from the little .221 Fireball in a rifle platform. I think it'd be a fun cartridge.
.275 H&H Flanged or Belted

.348 Win

6.5x54 M-S

.275 Rigby (marked on barrel) I heard they did do a commemorative batch for someone, DSC, maybe?

.318 Westley-Richards (sure it's basically a 338-06 but with a lot more panache!)
Posted By: ctw Re: List of nostalgic calibers - 03/04/11
I have often thought about the 275 rigby and the 225 winchester if I were to put together a single shot on the 348 it would either be 338 or 358 the 348 lacks bullets and I know!
I see nostalgia sure means different things for different people. Here's my list of nostalgia - combined with the #1 too:

#1RSI - 300 Savage
#1RSI - 257 Roberts
#1 AH - 7x57mm
#1 B (but with a slimmer forend like my S26M) - 35 Whelen
#1 H (24" barrel) - 45/70

And finally...#1 S26M - good ole 30/06 - wait, I already have that one!

Oooh,

AZ-- I would definitely take one of those! I plan on getting one in 7x57 someday and figure with the new African (or should I say Afrikaner!) in 9.3 the "Teutonic Twins" would do everything I ever needed and I could sell my other rifles (oh, blasphemy)!
How 'bout the .577/450 Martini-Henry?
[quote=AZ Southpaw]I see nostalgia sure means different things for different people.

Yep, interesting seeing different folk's take on it.

Jeff,

Without meaning to rain on your parade... And meaning no offense... But just exactly what is the point of this thread? Is this just a fun exercise? Or are you hoping to accomplish something positive?

I would expect that it's merely a fun exercise, Because you absolutely CANNOT get 10 people to agree on any ONE thing! We've been thru this many times before...

As you may not know, Anyone who is SERIOUS about having a #1 in any given chambering/configuration, will make a custom. Anyone who isn't will just sit and wish (And whine about how great an idea theirs' is...) frown

I had a #1 in 9.3x74R more than 5 years before Ruger made a factory one. I have a #3 in .356 Win. Ditto a #1 in 9.3x62, and 8x57 Mauser and will soon have a #1 in 6.5x54 M/S. I am also near finished collecting the parts to have a #1 in 7x65R. I am also collecting parts for a #1 in 8x68S.

Thereby comes the "Grasshopper Theroum #1:" There are two kinds of people in this world... "Those who WISH and those who WILL..." Unfortunately, there are very few of the latter and many of the former... grin

GH
Grasshopper,

I know you mentioned your take on this before but I, too, figured this thread was more in the 'just for fun' vein. However, I do have a question for you.

Obviously, you don't have to be specific as it is none of my business, but, roughly, how much more did it cost you to do a rebarrel for a custom #1? I think the cheapest I've ever seen a used 'donor' #1 is about $500-$600. I would then have to add the cost of the rebarrel (definitely more on a No.1 than, say, a Rem 700) to that to get my No.1 in a 'nostalgic' caliber. It would be nice to see a factory offering in some of these calibers as I think it would be more feasible cost-wise. However, you are correct when you say if someone really wanted one of these they would 'just do it'.

I don't see most of those mentioned ever being offered except maybe the .257 Bob in a RSI. But it does make for a fun thread to see what people think of in terms of 'nostalgic'.

BTW, definitely keep us posted on that 6.5x54. I would dearly love to see photos and hear your loadings and range results when you get it!
mojohand,

PM sent...
Grasshopper, yeah - The night I posted that, I was in the
middle of about a 25 hour stretch of running CNC lathes...
got parts have to be out the door, but 9:45 of cycle time.

Bored out of my skull and looking to b.s. with folks with
possibly similar interest.

Still on my first cup of coffee this morning, but am kinda
reading your post to me as "If you can't afford to build it
and post pictures of it, don't talk about it" which ain't
sitting the best. I'll leave it at that.
Maybe I missed it, or maybe you've already got one, but the .30/40 Krag would seem to fit your list handily. It oozes nostalgia, too.

Let me add the .244 H&H to the list, too. Not "American Nostalgic" maybe.................
How about a .256 Newton? 6.5 M/S? .303 Brit? All of them should qualify, too. .280 Ross? Look at just about anything available in the 19teens.............
Thanks ratsmacker, yep - those are all appealing to me.
Had been researching the 244 H&H in particular since I'm
smitten with the 300 and 375 versions.

As I said, I was just looking to generate good-spirited
discussion, and did not wish to try and impose my personal
take on it. But just in adding my .02 for grins, it
doesn't matter to me the country of origin.
Some I have, and would most like to have, are split between
Brit, American, and metric stuff with no particular
rhyme or reason. No hard cutoff dates on age, or technology.

I figured this group "gets" the feeling I have about most
all cartridges, in varying degrees, being capable of doing
the job, killing game, punching
paper, whatever. There is just another level of enjoyment I
get out of it with some calibers, from reloading them to
just looking at the cartridges. Guess I'm just a loony,
oh well. smile
Jeff,

Truly, I didn't mean to insult you. We have had many threads that folks hope to influence Ruger to build what they'd like. These do absolutely no good because no one can agree.

I am far to serious and far to logical to participate in threads like that. I love #1's and I love sharing and talking about them and yes; going to the range and sharing them with my friends.

Because I am so logical, I can pick apart about 90% of the suggestions because they are illogical.

I can appreciate your boredom, and see now that it was meant in fun. Thus, the chambering suggestions don't have to make sense. Please accept my most sincere apologies... Sorry I tainted your thread... frown

GH
Absolutely no problem GH, I acknowledge that you contribute a lot to these discussions and I am glad I did not fly off the handle as I sometimes tend to do smile
I'm so happy to see potential misunderstandings talked out in an amicable and mature way. It seems those two qualities are sorely lacking with many members and forums on the 'Fire. I appreciate the way things were handled.

Must be because we single shot guys, like our rifles, are just more classy! laugh

As an aside-
what chamberings are available with the 303 case as a basis?
For informational purposes, I took all the previous suggestions and put them in ascending order: These are all the rimmed cartridges....

.17 Bee
.218 Bee
.219 Donaldson Wasp
.219 Zipper
.220 Swift
.22 Hornet

7x57R
7x65R
8.15x46R
9.3x74R

The ones in Red have already been chambered in the #1 or #3 at one time...

Now... On to the rimless....
Now here are the rimless suggestions:

.221 Fireball
.244 H&H Mag.
.25 Rem.
.250/3000 Savage
.256 Newton
.257 Robts
.257 Wby
.275 H&H

.375 H&H
.404 Jeffery
.416 Rigby
6.5 Rem Mag
6.5x54 MS
6.5x55 Swede
7x57 Mauser

Again, those in Red have been chambered by Ruger at some time or another....
Now.... What is really interesting... Is to remove the ones that have already been made. And then remove the ones that there is no factory ammo available for... And this is what you have left: Rimmed Cartridges:

.225 Win
.25/20 WCF
.25/35 Win.
.32 Win Spl
.32/20 WCF
.327 Federal
.348 Win

Kind of sobering, isn't it?

Well.... As I said, Nobody's perfect... But I went back thru the list of all the previous suggestions, and I saw nowhere did anyone suggest the 7mm-08 or the .284 Win... smile Another poster mentioned the .220 Swift, but I didn't see that one either.... Perhaps I'm just blind... blush
Posted By: DMc Re: List of nostalgic calibers - 03/07/11
Very interesting spec sheet you put together. Thanks for the effort. I'll line up for the 35 Rem, 358 Win, and 300 Savage when Ruger gets around to building them!! They MUST be on the horizon somewhere.
I can attest that the .221 Fireball, in a rifle, is a very, VERY sweet shooter, more than accurate enough for prairie dogs, as an example, and is very economical to shoot. I love my little CZ Fireball, and I've got access to others, a 700 Classic, a custom-built Howa, and some Coopers. There are some LVSF Remingtons out there, too. All of them shoot great. The CZ I alluded to, was a half-inch gun, sometimes much less than that, right out of the box, with inexpensive 50gr. SPSX bullets. Funner than it oughta be, too.

None on a Number One, but that's just a barrel swap away, of course. Ruger already makes extractors for .223, so a barrel swap is all you'd need.
Posted By: stocker Re: List of nostalgic calibers - 03/07/11
Nobody remembers the 35 Winchester? I don't see real nostalgia connected to a lot of the suggestions. Must be a younger crowd.
Yes Sir, I agree. But then again, it has been interesting
to see what it means to different folks. To tell you the
truth, I never thought this post would generate this much
traffic, was just wanting to "shoot the breeze" when I started
it smile

I've tried to shy away from saying "nay" on anyones ideas
'cause well, I didn't want it to be about me, really just wanted to see more talk on the singleshot board.

I can't even explain why some choices don't appeal to me.
For example, my first single shot rifle was a gift from my
Dad, and of course I wouldn't part with it. However, it
just doesn't thrill me to use it as much as some other rifles I have, and I ask myself why?

The caliber is old (1920's I think)
It has a looooong history of outstanding performance
in the field, has been a pet of some famous outdoorsmen...
Efficient, popular, components and loaded ammo are plentiful.
So why I am I not as enthusiastic about it?
(it's a 270 winchester btw wink )

I guess the "different" or "oddity" factor is part of what
makes me like, what I like. And can't help but feel like that makes me a bit silly. But I guess there is no harm in it.

Interesting thread, somebody beat me to the 38-30 stevens, something neat about that long thin case.

I'm also a fan of rimmed rounds in single shots, so two medium bores I add are the 350 flanged rigby magnum, think of a slightly shorter 375H&H flanged necked down with a sharp shoulder, and of course the 375H&H flanged

If we included wildcats a 35 X 30-30 might be kinda neat.

Rigby used the land diameter as opposed to the groove diameter. I would like to see one in the 219 zipper or wasp or even the 22 Hi-Power. I have no idea why.

Yes, DEFINITELY "classy"... and oh so HUMBLE, too! grin grin grin (I just HAD to post this "comment" laugh )

I'll throw in for one in .219 Donaldson Wasp, and I would be first in line for one in .22 High Power (if it had a fast twist).
Jeffdwhite: I have a bunch of Ruger #1's right now - I have always enjoyed owning, dealing in and shooting them.
The first Ruger #1 I owned (bought new) had serial number 1,300 on it.
I have no intention of garnering a complete collection of Ruger #1's but I have always wanted to find an affordable Ruger #1-B in caliber 222 Remington.
The last one of these I saw was VERY expensive.
These are rare, nostalgic, probably so.
Yeah a Ruger #1-B in 222 Remington would have to be classified on the "nostalgic" list (bucket list!) for me.

Surprised that 30/06 didn't come up...sure fits classy and classic by about any definition I can think of: age, history, versatility, on and on. Maybe its inherent class makes it too mundane?

Have two 30/40s, in a #3 and a Contender, which I deerly love.

Interested in the 221 win and 348 win. Anyone know the pressure in a 348? Is it low enough to be chambered in a Contender?
How about the improved 30-40. The 30-03 Springfield.

I just enjoy the single shots. The 30/40 does all that I need for deer. However I am still interested in a 348 in a contender.
