Just found out that they made/make this caliber. Have any
of you owned or handled one? Never been a big fan of NEFs
and H&Rs but this seems like a cool little set up.
If you have the trigger worked, mine is 3 3/4lbs, they are actually a completely different gun. I have a single receiver with 3 barrels, 2 of which I fitted myself, 243 original, 30-06 and 450 Marlin. I wanted a gun that covered the gamut and I think this is it.
If you buy it, I think you will be happy as long as you understand it's limitations, which are few.
I was thinking of one in 30/39 for a truck gun.. I have two, and both are rimfires, 17 HMR and 22 Mag...
If I can pick up one in a cenbterfire action I have thought seriously about a 1 pair of barrels in 17 Hornet and 17 Fireball...
both would make a handy truck gun...
I have had a few an still have 4 or so thier great guns .Better then TC an my book

Just checked the list of barrels available only 35 is 35 Whelen. Just though I would let you know. Guess you will have to find a used one. Cheers NC
I have wondered over the years, what happened to NEF? Are they still around? Were they just a short lived "stump sprout" from H&R? Are they considered superior to H&R? Were they a transition from H&R until Marlin took on the brand?
I do take exception to the comment, "better than T/C's" but then again, I have several T/C's and no NEF's nor H&R's.
Actually I do have one H&R. A 9-shot revolver that has received no special treatment but still looks newish. It's double digit double action trigger pull contributes to its "throwing rocks" accuracy, but it always goes bang.

I have two, both rimfires. One is a .22 Magnum without sights and has the raised Monte Carlo style stock. The trigger breaks at about 3# and is a tack driver... Paid $125.00 for it and a Leupold 4.5-14 scope is on board....that is about as much disparity one can have in the old saying put more money into your scope than your gun.
The other is the standard .22 rifle with open sights. The front sight is a tad too tall and will not zero but just have not gotten around to trimming it down yet. The trigger is in the 6# range but does break very clean. Bought a Weaver scope base for it but the idiots at Weaver only put two slots in the base instead of the 6 slot base that they probably sell to NEF that is on the .22 Magnum. As a result the scope I wanted to put on it can't be adjusted to the proper eye relief without more cuts being made in the base.
Has anyone ever had one of the barrels rebored to a different caliber?
For the money paid for them they shoot very well...Bob
I thought about going from .357 to 35 rem but that wouldn't be a rebore
I had one in 17HMR. Shot well and worked well. My only complaint is that if you didn't wipe it off with an oiled rag right now it would rust while you looked at it. I do like the platform though. Simple, tough, and shoots well for what it is. Although I wouldn't venture into heavy recoil chamberings as they tend to be light and hammer the crap out of you if you aren't careful. The second NEF/H&R platform I shot single shot was a 10 ga.....ouch.

If you find a pair of those 30/39s, holler. I want one also.
30/39????
i HAVE OWNED SEVERAL, AND THEY SHOOT GREAT
I imagine the recoil from a 35 REM is going to be pretty stout
in a little single shot rifle.
not at all. A buddy of mine has one and it's very pleasant. Some of the .35Whelens with synthetic stocks will slap you naked and hide your clothes..
Recoil in the larger calibers isn't so bad in these little guns. I have one chambered for the 45/70 Government. Shooting commercial ammunition it's a pussycat. I handlaoded a couple boxes for it. Off the top of my head I dont recall what the details of the load, but I do remember that they were just a bit shy of the .458 win mag loads in velocity from the same Hornaday book I was using. Those were stout kickers but managable.
I have the 12ga rifled slug barrel version of this gun. That bastard is the hardest kicking gun I have ever fired. 5 rounds off the bench trying to sight it in and I gave up. Too painful.
"slap you naked and hide your clothes" thank you Schoolmarm,
you made me laugh right now and I really needed it!

glad to help...
I have fourteen centerfire Handi rifles, plus H&R/NEF rimfires and shotguns. They're all great guns.
H&R went broke and NEF took it over. Marlin bought them and Remington bought Marlin and brought back the H&R trade name.
I didn't fool around with the .35 Remington. I have two .357 Maximums and reamed a third .357 Magnum to .356/.358. Both calibers work interchangeably in the break action Handi. In a reamed .357 or .35, the extractor is changed to a modified .30-30 extractor. In a Handi, you can also load .356 brass to .358 levels. The frame will withstand much more pressure than either delivers. The .356 head spaces on the rim and the .358 on the shoulder. Both give you much more than a .35 Remington and almost what a .35 Whelen will yield.
If you can't find a .35, get a .357 and go wherever you want from there....357 Maximum, .35 rem, .356/.358.
I almost forgot to mention, you can wring .35 Remington performance out of the .357 Maximum in a Handi. I run a 180 gr. Hornady SSP at 2200 fps plus. Check out the info below for more details. Also, search the GBO website for more info on the Maximum.

Good luck,

There is a new 35 Rem. barrel on Ebay. It's not mine. Just passing the info along.
Anyone out there have one in 500 S&W ? Thinking it would make a nice little doe thumping brush gun!
one of my former students had one. He was in a climbing stand and got all twisted around trying to get a shot at a nice buck. Didn't hang on to the little .500 tight enough. It kissed him right over the eye and the blood flew. Had 2 blood trails for a little ways as he tracked the buck. He texted me and ask if I wanted it CHEAP.
I was thinking a ghost ring peep sight instead of a scope. I have shot the 460 s&w handgun (ported) and found the recoil mild and manageable. Too many people want to scope everything these days. I like the K.I.S.S. PHILOSOPHY. LOL For a thicket gun with shots under 50-75 yds. Why would you need a scope? Hunt thick for bucks in this neck of the woods.
Only way I would put a scope on a brush gun would be for someone like my dad who has vision issues. It jus happens to be that things blurr real bad at 18-22" out making focusing on the sight a real pain. Solution; red dot sight.
The young man was KISS. He can't use an open sight nor a receiver sight. Everybody can't be perfect...
Sorry if I offended you in any way. That was not my intent.
I am confused by your response.....
I looked at your profile and you say nothing of teaching special needs or handicapped people.....Very confusing to me......
I teach Metal Trades. I take girls, boys, blacks, whites, browns, SPEDs, handicapped and 4.0s. I don't turn any away, just try to teach them. The young man made a great welder, just had to use a strong cheater lens in his welding hood...
I always keep one of my T/C's set up witha 35Rem, peep sighted barrel. I think it is lighter than the NEf/H&R rifles.
Powerful, light recoil, and easy to carry. it is a good ranch rifle.

is yours a rifle/carbine length? I have a 14" and always wanted a longer barrel. If so where did you get it?
The NEF is a fine gun in any calibre
How often do you guys see NEF 35 REMs for sale?
nearly never. The people I know that have them love them..
Why?
I've seen .357Mag/Max barrels rechambered to 356/358, so can't see why a .357Mag/Max barrel couldn't be easily/safely to 35 Rem. Particularly when the barrel is from a break-action single-shot H&R.
Here's a picture borrowed from another site.
For anyone living in Canada around Ellwood Epps, they've got 5 of the Mossy Oak 35 Rems and 3 wooden stocked 35 Whelens for sale.
Our local shop just got in a bunch of these camo stocked distributor special NEF's. Two were 45-70, two were 35 Rem and three were 35 Whelen. The finish seemed fair at best for a new rifle. Going price was $299. The 35 Rem sounds fun, but I have to many other toys that don't get used enough.
Mike
Just my thout.35 rem there you are. Just me
Academy in Baton Rouge,LA. has some H&R's in 35 Rem with the camo stock. I was at the Academy in Hammond,LA. yesterday and saw they had the CVA Scout/Hunter singleshot rifles in 35 Rem.
I have a H&R 35 Rem rifle with camo stock that originally came with in a 2 barrel set with a 444 barrel also. Mine is very accurate and you can shoot Super 35 loads in it. I had one in 35 Whelen and it shot great but recoil would get your attention and now I like the 35 Rem better.
I bought a CVA Scout rifle in 44 mag at the Hammond store last night. They have the hunter version of this made for Academy in 243 and 7mm-08 youth rifles also.
The 35 Rem Scout rifle came with a Konus 3-9x40 scope for $299. I got the Scout 44 magnum without scope for $209.
There is a seller on GB with 60 of them in stock for $322 each.
What is the auction number ? I'll punch it to 358

I got this .35Rem barrel factory new on my G2 it is 18". I love my T/C's as Carbines, or in the case of my 28 Gauge, as shotguns.
358, always a good choice!!!
I bought a 35 remington handi rifle a year or so ago and have killed a couple of bucks with it during the Mississippi "primitive" weapon season last year. I have only shot remington and hornady factory ammo in it and both brands shoot good for me. I've killed two 185lb-200lb bucks with it and both ran about 30 yards and crashed shot thru the lungs. The first was 177 yards (according to my rangefinder) and the other was about 30 steps. The first buck was with remington 150 grain cor-locs and the second was with hornady leverevolution 200 grain. I recovered both bullets on both deer under the hide on the opposite side from the shot. Recoil is mild and I feel comfortable taking a 200 yard shot with it. The rifle is short and "handi" and locks up tight. The only thing I don't like about the rifle is that I wish that it ejected the brass like the older handi rifles. Hopefully, I'll get to try it out on a couple more this year.
Jericho,
You know you don't want a 35 Rem, this one's funner:
23" T/C
DMc
That would be cool to own.
i owned a 35 remington. totally factory gun and shot core lokts into about a 1.5" group at 100 yards. it was a great gun! instant death on whitetails in my neck of the woods. sold it thinking i wanted an Encore more, and found out real quick i shouldnt have crossed that fence.
i now own a 16.5" 444 Marlin, a 45 Colt Classic Carbine, and two 30-30's. all are great shooters. i will be buying a 357 as soon as i can come up with a couple hundred bucks to throw away. i want an armadiller thumper for my 38 spl cast loads. should be a mouse fart like in my Marlin.
if it hasnt been addressed (only read page 1), most 357 barrels came on a shotgun receiver. dont think it ia safe to rechamber to rifle caliber unless you get a rifle frame.
There is a seller on GUNBROKER with 130 H&R handi rifles in 35 Whelen.
