I’m looking at this 1886. Since the rear screw us not shiny like the front one, is it fair to assume it’s been replaced? If so, what would be a reasonable explanation for why?

Don't know if you can make any assumptions based upon the condition of the screws, nor discern the reason for suspected replacement.

Looks like that gun may have worn a tang sight at one time.
Yes, plus, filler screw may be a little proud of the tang, the thumb wrapping around the rifle right over that screw could have easily removed the blue over the years, I would have no issues with that screw, hope you buy it, I love mine.
It was not factory and shows that somewhere along the line the gun sported a tang sight.
Stock has been refinished at some point in its life. Could be a great shooter but don’t pay collecter value for it.
You know it is not near as nice as mine....
