I have been thinking very seriously for awhile about a good combination gun. I previously had a Savage 24 in .223/20Ga.It was ok but I wasn't happy with the rifle caliber.
Next thing that came to mind was the Savage 24 in 30-30/12 Ga. Considered it but wanted a wee bit more oomph in the rifle caliber.
Finally I did a lot of reading on the Baikal line. The reviews were good and 12Ga/.308 seemed to fill the need for me.I ordered the gun on Tuesday and it arrived at the local shop yesterday. This is a good field grade gun.The fit is great.Mechanicals look good.Wood is a deep color and the receiver and barrels have a matte dark finish.I'll pick it up today since I didn't carry a case with me yesterday to bring it home in.
Range report at the first chance I get to go to the gun club.

Stan,

I got one new a few years ago for a real right price. It was 12ga/7X57R and it shot ragged holes. I never seemed to use it, so I let it go down the road and now regret that decision.

I had an EAA IZH-94 in 12 over 6.5x55 and never could get it to shoot worth a damn. A friend of mine convinced himself that the accuracy problem was shooter related, IOW my fault, and not rifle related, so he bought it from me knowing that he would have better success. He didn't, despite putting together dozens of different loads and firing between 400 and 500 rounds of them. I think that he traded it to a pawn broker and was happy, happy, happy to see it go down the road.

Whenever I see him, I smile but he doesn't.

I had a couple of Rem 700s that wouldn't keep them in a washtub at 50', and I had an early Mdl 70 Classic that was worse. Some are just lemons. whistle

I would agree with that one hundred percent.

I have ordered a 1.5-4.5 long eye relief(5.5 inches)but it has not arrived.I had a chance to go to the gun club yesterday and shoot the new rifle using it's iron sights. The .308 barrel grouped pretty good and I was able to hit a bowling pin exactly center mass at 100 yards with a 12 gauge Breneke slug.I am satisfied that a scope will make this a shooter.More to follow.

I got the scope in and mounted.Today I went to the gun club and sighted it in.I an very satisfied with the accuracy of this rig.
It very definitely fills my niche for a "one gun".

Great! laugh

You now have a very good meat-&-potatoes combination gun that will kill anything in North America. cool

I often wish I hadn't sold mine in 7X57R. frown

I picked up a MP94 7x57R over 12ga last year and have found it very accurate, mounted a 2-8x32 Columbia (Kruger Optics) scope with 22 tip off rings and find they work great, other than wanting to slide forward after shooting too many 3" 12ga loads. Very pleased other than making me wonder why I need all the other guns......

Quote "making me wonder why I need all the other guns".That is the exact thought in my head and at age 71(soon to be 72) I do not hunt as much as often or as hard as I used to and that was what made me into this mode of thinking about "one gun".
I figure I will end up with perhaps five guns in the safe counting pistols and revolvers.
My old .22 revolver
the new combo gun
the 30-30 bolt action
.54 muzzle loader
45/70 Handi rifle
Which means I have a half dozen firearms to dispose of.

Still gotta have a 5# shotgun, a few Marlins, my 375 Ruger, an armload of pistols and the 257 Roberts that started it all on my 16th birthday.

The saga continues.
I was anxious about the 11MM scope mounts I used not being solid enough to handle recoil from the 12 gauge or the .308 over a period of time.Previously I have scoped a Mosin-Nagant utilizing a BKL Technologies scope mount designed for an air gun.
After 5 years it was solid as can be with no loosening or any other problem. These are good mounts. An air gun actually has more severe recoil than a firearm.
Yesterday I called and ordered the same mount for my Baikal. The price of $35 hasn't changed in five years.
If you have an 11MM rail I recommend this mount.I'll post more when I get it,mount it and shoot it.

I use some that clamp onto the dovetail most of its length and have a picatinny rail along the top. They seem very sturdy.

Here's a link to another thread that shows the three different ways I've mounted scopes on an 11mm dovetail, they all worked just fine, but most were too high for me.

Hey that gun sounds familiar. I am glad its working out for you. I am kicking around the idea of buying one in 12/30-06. The only issue I had with it was finding ammo and its like carrying a 2x4 in the woods. Did you have any luck with it Jim

Harvested 1 partridge. You don't need to bring a jack handle for the truck.
Posted By: Irving_D Re: Baikal MP94 - 05/07/13
No you just need the truck to carry it. How are you making out finding ammo for it. That was my biggest dilemma with it.
Posted By: jimone Re: Baikal MP94 - 05/09/13
Bought 2 boxes at Graf, shot 1 and have loaded twice with 150gr Partitions. Primer pockets tight but no problem otherwise.

Are those MP94s still available? And for how many dollars out the door?
Posted By: Stan_in_SC Re: Baikal MP94 - 05/12/13
Baikal MP94s were readily available from my local gun shop's distributor,Ellett Bros.I had it within two days of placing my order.
MSRP is $702.My gun shop gives cost plus ten percent plus freight and tax.My total was slightly less than $600.

You can find them used over the net for much less.
Posted By: Stan_in_SC Re: Baikal MP94 - 05/13/13
I am sure you can find them cheaper somewhere but I wanted a new firearm and I wanted to support my local gun shop.

Wednesday is my usual day at my gun club. I took the Baikal with the new mount installed to re-sight it. My goal was two inches high of the bull at 100 yards.
After eyeball bore sighting the rifle I started out at 25 yards with good results and then moved to 50 yards which required one minor adjustment.
Final three shots were exactly where I wanted them at 100 yards.
I am very very satisfied with this combo gun and the way I have it set up. Now I gotta wait till deer season to try it out.

I have 2 of these guns, 1 is a 223 under a 12ga. that was sold for a time by Remington as a SPR94 but is still stamped IZH94 on the side.
The other is a new 308-12ga.

The rubber recoil pads on these guns are harder than the wood that they are screwed to so I have fitted both of mine with decelerator's.

I tinkered around for quite some time trying to find a scope that worked properly with the right eye relief. A rifle scope has too short an eye relief and a handgun scope too long an eye relief. I found the perfect scope for me is the Leupold fxII 2.5x SCOUT.

The reason I have 2 is because I bought the 223 several years ago and loved it, when I found the 308 version last year my plan was to sell the 223. after spending time with the 308 I found the rifle part shot very well BUT............ the rifle and shotgun have no where close to the same point of impact at 50 yards. might be selling the 308 unless I can find a solution, but I am keeping the 223 one way or the other it is great for coyote calling.

I have tried many different shotgun loads and found #4 buck is the biggest shot that will pattern properly.

For anyone who might have an itch that needs scratching, there was an IZH-94 in 6.5x55 on GB yesterday, 05/18/13.
Posted By: erich Re: Baikal MP94 - 05/19/13
Arn't the barrels adjustable for point of impact? I haven't handled one but my AA looks like it is set up the same. The center of the barrel where the sling swivel attaches does the elevation and the front conection on the end of the barrel does the windage.

They are and can be regulated perfectly. REMEMBER...any small change at the muzzle or wedge causes a lot of POI movement.
