What is this thing?
Found this yesterday just inside the woods when I went out to hang trail cams. I thought at first it was something to secure train rails but there's nothing to capture the rail's flange. It looks like something to hold landscape timbers when they're terraced - any ideas? Thanks.

My son the railfan thinks it's a tieplate associated with a switch that's installed against the side of the rail to prevent lateral rail movement. He adds its an old one because they don't use ones that look like that anymore.

He adds its an old one because they don't use ones that look like that anymore. We call that a "bolster". And yes - that is what it does. It actually is supposed to keep the rail from tipping under stress. You see them used mostly near the point of a switch. It actually goes on top of a plate.
