Most people will fight to repel an unfamiliar fighting force..... causes be damned.

It's one thing for the "elites" to debate the "Cause of the war" in any conflict.

The "reason people fought" is always the same......... to get something they want, or to keep something they have.

It's pretty obvious that Mexico was fighting to KEEP Texas under its thumb.

The North fought to KEEP the South under its thumb.["Preserving the Union" was just a means to that end]

The Texians and the South were fighting to GAIN independence.

I KNOW which side I'd have taken in both cases.
