If flying in Alaska was cheap, profitable and easy there'd be a lot more airlines doing it.
As you probably recall, Alaska Airlines did everything they could to drive out their competition. The guys with the deepest pockets usually win though. Of course the Feds did what they could to eliminate jet service to smaller hubs too.
