Allen: I did remove material to reshape. The outer skin went away easily and the inner core was layered fiberglass/plastic ....the only issue was rasping...it would often expose the fiberglass and shred it somewhat. Using sandpaper instead of a rasp cleared that up.
I did not feel the need to epoxy coat the exposed stock...it seemed to retain its integrity well.
If you are going to remove a LOT of stock you might proceed with caution..I never took more than 1/4 inch off anywhere except the wrist/top of comb...took almost an inch there...but didn't hit anything important.
