Not so. In 2004 when Kerry was running for President the state legislature stripped Romney of his ability to appoint a replacement and changed it so a special election must be held.
They were not going to let a Republican take a Mass senate seat.
It is still by special election.

I still don't see Warren settling for VP under idiot Biden, it would be the death of her hopes for running for Prez to be saddled with all the horrible decisions and things he would say and women he would fondle in front of cameras.
