My beautiful orange and white setter Scarlet died suddenly at age nine in 2015....first time we have lived where we could dig a grave on our own land for one of ours. I found a big chunk of white quartz with golden stripes, that is her grave marker. Later I planted white daffodils on the grave. The site is on the edge of the woods frequented by ruffed grouse.
For frozen ground, old-time cemeteries used to build a fire on the spot to thaw it enough to dig.
