It's not so much hitting at 300 yard as whether or not it would be good on elk at just under 300. Comparing the 30/30 LR round vs 170 gr load, the 30/30 LR has the same energy at just under 300 yards as the 170 gr has at 100. On paper it looks like it should be all right for elk. I wouldn't hesitate take a good shot at an elk at 100 yards with a 170 gr. bullet.

I thought someone may have tried a long shot on elk too.
