To get the front ring into position one unscrews the ocular bell and also the plinth holding the windage and elevation screws. Slide the ring on, reinstall everything. You're right, not a good idea with a scope with gas sealed inside. (Although I wonder how many of those scopes, with a little age on them, actually retain that gas. Anybody know about that?)
