I have a couple with Leupold 2X7's that I like fine. A 6X will be blurry if a gopher or squirrel pokes his head up 20 feet away but on 3x you can see them fine.
I have old 3X Weaver on a 17 HMR that can/does/will hit small critters at 100 plus yards. I like the variables but if I was going to use fixed I would choose a smaller power rather than higher for critters, but higher for paper.
