The 8400 action was designed for the WSM family of cartridges..the long action version handles the regular mag cartridges like 7mm rem,300 win and 338.
The 84L is a stretched version of the 84m. A 30-06 84L will be a lighter action then a 8400 action in 06. Hope that helps.
