Johnson's paste wax works great and is pretty durable. Turtle wax works well as mentioned above. Just coat the rifle out of the stock before the season, and check it after the season or if it gets a good soaking.
Paint on stainless works great, but remember even stainless rusts and it is hard to know exactly what is going on in the bore.
