You're right of course on the chambering.

I'm thinking the rather anemic US factory loads for the 8x57 should serve the boy well as the recoil will be mild. I'm set up to reload for the cartridge as the boy gets older (he's 11 now and 100 pounds) and more accustomed to recoil.
