The Corsair was often referred to as the "Bent Wing Bird" due to it's "cranked" or inverted gull wing design. They were "cranked" to 1) permit a 90 degree joint to the circular fuselage (and thereby minimize drag), 2) permit shorter and more sturdy landing gear and, 3) (most importantly!) allow the very large diameter propeller needed to adsorb the 2600 hp. engine's power without striking the ground (not good!)..
