I have built a lot of .243s on short action.The SA 700s required an extended mag box to accommodate the throating I found to work best with the 105gr VLD.
My preference these days is to use a long action. I think they feed better and I much prefer the better front scope ring support the long action affords.

If going long action, any advantage in using the .243 over the 6/06 or .260 over the 6.5/06?

Not for me. The same question could be asked if going SA between 6/.284, .243 Win AI or SAAMI .243 Win.
I get 3050fps from the 105gr with good barrel life. More speed won't help me but more practice seems to pay a dividend.
