That all depends on how tough your boy is.

If I want a "one and done" hunting bullet for the 30.06 I start with the 180gr Nosler Ballistic tip. However I won't start my kids with that load. For deer it's more likely to be 130 or 140gr NBT out of a .270 Win with a good recoil pad.

If you are still in the process of choosing a caliber, 6.5x55 Sweed with high BC 140gr NBT's and the rounds moderate recoil could be an option as well.
