I don't see any downside to owning an '06.
The downside is that once you own a .30-06, you realize you'll never have justification to buy another rifle!
Well, the opposite is true for me. Have a 270 WSM in a Winchester 70 Fwt and a 308 Win in a Savage 99. With those two, it's hard to justify getting an '06.
In fact, I've never owned an 06. Dad had a M-1 Garand Tanker, but he let that go years ago. Only took that hunting one season before I got my first rifle that was really mine (as opposed to a dad loaner).
