Through the late 70's & early 80's I used a #10 Ballard in 38-55 on a lot of deer. It always worked fine although a tad on the heavy side.

This is a #4 Perfection in 45-70 - has a standard weight 28" barrel and weighs just over 9lbs. It's never felt too heavy and is trim enough I just grab it at at the balance point and it carries great - haven't felt any need for a sling. As I recall, the #5 Pacific had a wiping rod under the barrel.
