You made no mistake Mike. People don't realize NECG makes a ghost ring sight and, as noted, their original design doesn't work as one.
Alot of people, including me, get surprised by how well they can use aperture sights. Much more precise than a v-notch and much easier for old eyes to use. Without a scope on top, your #1 probably feels much more lively in the hand. Are you using a bead front sight? I see NECG offers a patridge style front sight insert for the Ruger. Many people that use ghost rings on lever guns prefer them.
