Taking the family up to Emily, Mn. for a week over the 4th of July. The lake we're staying on (Emily Lake) is okay for panfish and such, but I've always wanted to hit the Whitefish Chain. We're about 20 minutes from Cross Lake and I could dump the boat in over there anywhere. Anyone have any suggestions on where to start? Would like to start early in the morning for walleyes and then maybe switch over to panfish later in the morning. Pike or muskie would be of interest too. Thanks for your suggestions.

Clear, clear water means early and late, or deep during the day. Walleyes mean Shiners and green jigs - fish a bit deeper than you might in a usual lake. Start 18'-20', and don't hesitate to go lots deeper - like 40' - if you see fish on bottom. Lots of structure in the 20'-40' range, and fish sometimes bunch up on those underwater humps. I like Trout Lake, but Hay also. Main part of Whitefish itself too but boat traffic can be a gigantic distraction. Very busy much of the time, weekends really busy!!
Great bass lake just aboout anywhere, btw. Rubber worms and tubes on the deep weedlines can be fun - just keep moving along that deep weedline as you cast up and work into deeper water.

Thanks for the info. I'm figuring on staying off the bigger lakes on the weekend. Got a "super secret" walk-in spot to try if I can get back to it. I'm thinking about a mid-week trip out on the Whitefish chain. Jigs sounds great-my favorite way to fish for walleye, unless I'm being lazy and slip-bobbering.
