An old acquaintence and hunter just called me. In shock.
He was trying to get a pesty deer off his lawn and away from his camp (ie lyme desease threat, spooks up his dogs and neighbors get angry, etc) so.... he took out his .177 cal, 1000 fps pellet rifle. The deer presented him with a rear view at about 50 feet... so he aimed at its rear end and hit it in the spincter. The deer dropped. In shock he didn't know what to do. He waited five minutes and went over to it and said the darn thing was dead.
In all is years of hunting he has never heard of such a thing and wondered if I could ask other deer hunters if they can explain this phenomenon.
He said the deer went about 130 pounds.

It's not a phenomenon........
Just something happened that someone didn't really think through before acting on it.....
Little tools can kill big animals, it happens......
Bet your old acquaintence will find another way to get the pesky deer off his lawn next time.....he only has 5,000 ways to choose from.....

I'd think it was made up too except I know this guy and he wouldn't make this story up. No reason.

Uh-Oh! Was that a bonded pellet or a cup-and-core pellet? I see a lively debate coming...

nice shot. Zeiss or Leupold?
Half-minute accuracy, while pleasant to observe, is in no way superior to one-minute accuracy in any serious rifle. Col. (RET.) Jeff Cooper

1000 fps and he didn't want to kill it??? Unless he's a total idiot, that was no accident....
Biden's most truthful quote ever came during his first press conference, 03/25/21. Drum roll please...... "I don't know, to be clear." and THAT is one promise he's kept!!!

Now Yogiman just think on that some. If you was just standing around minding your own business and just maybe thinking about where your next sandwich was coming from and somebody shot you in the a$$ with a 1000 fps 177 cal pellet wouldn't you drop?
I'd think that poor old deer just died of shock! <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/shocked.gif" alt="" />
Lead enemas will do that to you.
I'd bet dollars that he couldn't do it again in a thousand tries. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif" alt="" />
Just one of them strange things that happen now and then.

He may not have wanted to kill it, but it looks as though he could have shot it in a less sensistive spot if he were not trying to hurt it much.

Am thinking he hit a tad lower than the sphincter... in a MUCH more sensitive area...
That'd drop me like a rock... guaranteed.

If true I would think he shot high and brained it fom behind. I used 1000fps. pellets on cats and although they could do the deed on occasion I gave it up as too cruel. They just don't have what it takes unless everything is perfect.

If you DONT want to hurt an animal you yell at it You DONT shoot it with ANYTHING.. 1st rule of gun safety: Dont point a gun at anything you DONT want to destroy
One shot, one kill........ It saves a lot of ammo!

22 short or long at what speed?? Point being is that no one would fire a 22 at the deer to get it out, bb going slow MAYBE, but HUA syndrome was in full swing here.
Can't say much as I've managed HUA syndrome here and there at times like we all have.

I believe it. In the hunter education class this weekend, the instructor stressed the serious capabilities of todays pellet rifles. Related the factual story of a youth killed by a pellet rifle when the pellet went between two ribs and entered the heart/damaged the heart.
Not certain on this deer version what the entry point and cause of death was.

An arrow doing 200 FPS with a field tip would kill a deer stone dead. Could have just been a fluke, maybe after getting shot in the azz, he swallowed his toung.
I may not be smart but I can lift heavy objects
I have a shotgun so I have no need for a 30-06.....

I own a RWS 1,000 footer. They are very powerful guns. Over in Europe where firearms are not allowed, airguns are huge. I have read many a story of how hunters over there kill wild goats with their air rifles...usually head shots in the temple.
A "hole" shot (kill) with a pellet gun is hard to believe, but stranger things have happened.
Life is Good....
One trip a week to the range and a family that loves to shoot and hunt.
