Any opinions on the different stocks the 1895 is available with? I'm looking at the 1895GS with the straight grip and the 1895GBL with the pistol grip. Felt recoil and general handling?

Personally I like the pistol grip with heavy loads, you can control some of the recoil. I shoot both styles it just depends what your shooting.

Had a straight grip 1895 back in the 1980s, have a GBL now.
I prefer the GBL pistol grip, and it's excellent recoil pad.

The 1895 GBL came in today. What a total disappointment. The bolt locks open and will only close if you put pressure on the loop puling it to the right while closing the loop. The Marlin site shows the GBL with a recoil pad and in the written spec's it says it comes with "ventilated recoil pad" This rifle has a small hard rubber pad on it. WTF?

I bought an 1895 when they first came out in the early 70's. The first ones had Ballard rifling 22" BBL and Straight grip. I wouldn't have one any other way. All I've ever shot thru it are 400 gr Speer Flat Points ahead of 53 gr of 3031, lookin' thru the receiver sight. Knocks the snot outta most anything ,

It will be on its way back to Rem/lin tomorrow on their nickel. The receiver is finished with a belt sander with what looks like 180 grit and not even the bluing hides much of that. Another minute with 400 would have produced a nicer finish.
Today with CNC machinery these receivers are made much faster and BETTER than the years ago, there is no excuse for the parts not fitting perfectly.

Really is a shame. Ive been on the hunt for a GBL or SBL and often thought about taking a chance on a new one, this just reaffirms my suspicions that I should just wait.

The bolt problem was caused by a spent primer blocking the bolt. Works OK now.
