Bed the factory stock, float it generously and cut the barrel to 21 inches, tune trigger Don't waste money restocking and fluting the bolt, cerakote it down the track if you really like it

I wouldn't cut the barrel until I had the stock I wanted so as to put balance where I want it. A McM Classic edge would be on the list, but right now I'd probably consider a EH6 or EH8 from Manners. I think I could really like one of those as well. http://mannersstocks.com/hunting-stocks/For a scope, I'd look very hard at the LRHS from Bushnell.

Just picked up a Remington Model 700 SPS in .260 from the deal from Whittaker Guns in the Hunting Rifle forum. Thinking about doing some modifications and wanted y'alls opinions This is the rifle I picked up. 260 Remington, 1 in 8" twist, 24" barrel I am thinking about a McMillan Edge stock in GAP camo and fluting the bolt before I get it coated. Cerakote? NP3? Any other ideas? Trigger? I think this will be a fun gun to shoot and I prefer lighter rifles Help me spend my money Sounds like it's on the way, what is the plan?

Drum,
Edge it and cut back to 22" as it will balance better with the sporter barrel -
Send it to Eddie for bedding/coating -
Done -

Talk about a scope that cost more than the rifle! Nice setup ScenarShooter.

Uh, I doubt the scope cost more than that GAP... Scope looks like a S&B, that costs a hell of lot more than Drummond's rifle.

Low end on a GAP rifle is three grand. The 10x S&B can be had from Eurooptic for just over two.

Keep the 24" barrel Game Scout EDGE, preferably with the adjustable cheek pc Timney 510 3-9 Zeiss with RapidZ 600
You can order the edge with no paint and send it off for the GAP camo. No way in hell I'd flute the bolt. It's worse than a solution in search of a problem.

Got a good deal on a Rem 700 in .260rem? Looking to "build"?
Resist The Impulse!
No matter how much $$ you pour into the action it won't hold value.
The barrel will never be more than a tomato stake. You're already set to blow $600 on a custom stock... Really ought tally it all up and see where you're heading.
Sell or trade your way to something that will hold value and not need $500 of work on the action.
If the rifle is unfired and complete w/box and all factory packaging, keep it that way.
Spending Big money without going all the way will just be half measures. Barrel, McM stock, and trigger are $1300 or more and then you got action job, truing, floorplate assembly; maybe an extended follower.... Don't forget the Win 70 safety assembly & shroud.
Start with a precision action and you are miles ahead. Plenty of Rem 700 footprint actions to choose from. Sure, they cost, but your investment will keep its value and you are looking at about the same money.

So a Rem 700 is nothing more than a tomato stake? I can only shake my head after reading the last post as words escape me right now.......
