Dude, what a question. It's like "what's better bolndes or redheads?"

Always seemed to me a single shot like a #1 should be in a heavier caliber. That said I have a #1 in 6mm and a #3 in .22Hornet. I love the 7mm Mau. and a local dealer has a 1A which I lust after.

BUT, a .405 sounds wonderful and should a #1 in 9.3X62 ever be made ............I'll own it!!

Yeah,a .404 J would be sweet! Bet if Ruger pumped out a few limited #1's in the old African calibers they'd sell quite a few.

But a .45/70 naw, it ain't really heavy.

How about this:
[Linked Image]

It has since been checkered by Doug Mann and case colored by Classic Guns.

It will shoot in the mid 240s very consistently at 200 yds (it's a .22 rimfire).

I just like shooting single shots and don't reallly have a favorite caliber. Probably the one I have had the most fun with is a rifle a friend of mine built and gave to me. It is a BSA small action martini with an octagon barrel and he chambered it for the 357 max. It has a flip up tang peep on the rear and the front is an old hooded winchester sight with interchangeable inserts. I just use it for shooting steel at 100 yards off hand and use 357 cases with a cast 250 gr. spitzer type bullet seated out pretty far. It is an accurate gun and a lot of fun to shoot. I have an original ballard 22 LR, 3 number 1's, a remington RB and a highwall. I think that martini has been one of my favorite shooters for just plain shooting chickens and pigs, etc.

Ruger did make a run in .404 Jeffery. I have one. They seemed to have a problem with the chambering. Ruger used a set of specs that was apparently wrong. There's been all kinds of stories on how many were made, but it definitely was a limited run. from what I understand, those who had problems witht he chambering returned then to Ruger for repair and were either given a refund ot the option to replace it with another #1 of different caliber. I don't know just how much of that is fact, but on the Ruger forum, that's the dope I got. I have three #1s in Tropical form, the .375 H&H, .404 Jeffery and a .416 Rigby. All thre rifles are fairly heavy as they should be for the cartridges they are chambered to. Ammo for the .404 is darn hard to find and the .416 Rigby ain't cheap. Even .375 H&H ammo has gotten pricey lately. Even so, they fun to take out to the range every once in a great while. Especially the .416. After a few rounds from that one, the .300 Win. mag. feels like a pop gun.

I have a few single shot rifles , My current favorite is a Ruger #3 in 22 hornet. i am in the process of putting together a #1 in 240 Weatherby. My other #1 is a 45-70 1b. then there are several old single shot rifles ranging from a trap door to a rolling block with a couple Stevens mixed in. I like them all.

I have to go with the 30-06, which makes my number 1 an 'any animal' rifle. 7x57 is indeed a classic, but I agree with the poster that a FB should be in a rimmed cartridge if possible - it just seems 'right'

275 flanged would be cool, if brass weren't so scarce.

Ron,

I'm with you. My post assumed "ideal conditions". While my 7X57 is of the rimless variety, it's not going anywhere...I wonder if it can be reamed to 7X65R?? Where's that book on cartridge dimensions....

Jeff

I see no reason why you couldn't just run a (7X57) rimmed reamer into it & probably modify the extractor/ejector a bit. Just cut the rim without deepening the chamber. If necessary, you could back the barrel up one turn and shorten the rib by 1/16" to get a little tighter chamber in 7X57R. I agree that ss rifles are better with rimmed cases (even the break open T/C's)

Probably get some disagreement here, but a great SS caliber for any game in N. America would be the 8X57 JRS. I had one in a Krieghof drilling that I hunted from the everglades to Alaska with. It was very versatile, accurate and deadly.
