Welcome to the 'fire. You will discover a wealth of info and mis-info here. Some might accuse me of mis-info, but I know I'm correct 'cause I been there and done that. smile Today "pistol" scopes are significantly better than when I was breaking them in the early 1990's with my Freedom Arms .454. It ate about a dozen. My favorite was the Bushnell 2-6X because I fired more sub 2" groups at 100 yards with it than all the others combined. It just could not handle the repeated recoil of the .454.

The one that lasted was the second generation Leupold Vari-X 2 1/2-8X32. The first one, like most of the rest, lasted about 300 rounds. It is, in fact, still on there after thousands of rounds. The eye relief starts about a foot and goes out from there. The glass, perhaps, was the best of all of them.

I hope that helps.

I've had a Leupold Vari-X 2.5-8x on a 15" Encore handgun in 7mm-08 for over 10 years now and its been great. My only complaint is that the eye relief is a bit too much for my arm length too; but other than that it seems real tough and has great glass so that's where it stays. I put a 20mm 2x Leupold on a 7.5" Redhawk 44 Mag. and much prefer the eye relief. If you're not doing any real long range stuff a 2x can be a lot more useful than some people think. Between my two handgun scopes and several of my friends with them I've yet to see a Leupold handgun scope fail.
