I'm just getting started in reloading for my 280 in a model700 mountain rifle. What bullet and powder combination would you choose? I will be hunting whitetails and black bear. Keep in mind it's not uncommon to shoot a 400lbs. Plus bear here in PA.

I have shot quite a few whitetails in Missouri with various 140 grain bullets. I am currently using 140 gr Accubonds with RL 19 with my .280 Rem Mountain rifle. I have found that my Mountain rifle shoots various 140 gr bullets very accurately.

57.0 grs RL19 and either 140 gr BT or 140 gr PT shot well under MOA for me in a M700 Classic.

My 1993 vintage .280 MR has always liked IMR 4350 better than the RL's and H4831. It shoots both the Hornady 139 BTSP and 150 Nosler Partition extremely well (sub-MOA for ten shot groups) with full book loads (~55gr). The Hornady bullet works great on deer and antelope but if I were held to only one bullet I would go with the 150gr or heavier Partition .

I have a 700cdl in 280 with a 24"barrel and 1:10 rifling. I have very good luck with RL19 and 145, and 160 grain speer bullets. Don't know what the velocities are, but I get nice groups at 100yds.

My first big game rifle was a Rem CS in 280 with a 22" barrel which was glass bedded and it also took the brunt of my reloading experiments. That was over 25 years ago and I'm not the best shot in the world by any stretch but I'll post some reloads and I'll start with the tightest group......3/16"

139 gr. Hornady SST
57 gr. IMR 4831
WW Nickle Brass
Fed 215 primer
COL- 3.345
3/16" groups

139 gr. Hornady SST
56 gr. IMR 4350
RP Brass
WLR primer
COL- 3.33"
<1" with 2 shots touching

140 gr. Nosler Partition
57 gr. RL19
RP Brass
210 M Primer
COL-3.275"
3035 fps
3/4" groups

150 gr. Nosler Partition
56 gr.. RL22
RP Brass
WLRM Primer
COL-3.310
<1" groups

160 gr. Sierra BT
53 gr. RL22
RP Brass
WLR Primer
COL-3.275
3/4" groups

139 gr. Hornady SST
56 gr. RL22
RP Brass
WLR primer
COL- 3.33"
1/4" groups

150 gr. Nosler Partition
57 gr. IMR 4831
WW Nickle Brass
210 M Primer
COL-3.30
1/4" groups

this is what it shoots today,
140 gr Barnes TSX
57 gr. IMR 4831
RP Brass
WLRM primer
COL-3.250
1/2" groups

And a varmit load
100 gr. Hornady HP
60 gr IMR 4350
WW Nickle Brass
WLRM primers
3320 fps
1/2"groups

When I had one, it loved the 140 X (first generation and XLC) over 60.5 grains RL22. 3050 FPS. Have since moved on to the AI version, with the TTSX, but same powder.

Same load I used and same velocity, but bullets were 140 Sierra, 140 NPT and 140 Bitterroot. Good killing load.

The 280 Remington is overbore.

The 7 Rem Mag is over bore.

I used H4350 and a 145 hot core for years. Several Elk and deer with that combo.
