Back in 1988 with money saved up from during a Reforger exercise I picked up a 6 inch full underlug GP100. I shot it for a couple of years and then traded it off. I have a 4 inch now, but I haven't shot it in about 10 years.

A used 22/45. I don't remember what I paid, 150 or 200 I think. 15 years later and I have no idea how many 1,000s of rounds later it's still cranking them out and still accurate. Very very very few issues with that thing failing to feed over the years. I already had a 6" 629 my folks gave me for attending HS enough to graduate. Second handgun I bought was a HiPoint 9mm, for my bride. Was all I could afford, and figured it was better than a .22 for self defense, and she couldn't handle the .44. I replaced it with a 3" model 60 for her 21st birthday.

6" Ruger Blackhawk, 1978. I think I paid $179, not sure. My son has it now.

29-2 when I was 13. My mom bought it from a cop buddy...
I try to stick with the basics, they do so well. Nothing fancy mind you, just plain jane will get it done with style. You want to see an animal drop right now? Shoot him in the ear hole. BSA MAGA

k20350: The first handgun I purchased was for a gift to my older brother upon return from his second tour in Viet Nam. It was a Ruger Blackhawk in 357 Magnum. The year was 1968'ish. We took that pistol out and promptly shot ourselves deaf with it after just 100 rounds plinked away. I mean neither of us could hear for two days as we were not smart enough to have brought along ear protection (that was THE last time I ever let that happen!). It was a cool gun for the times and I think he still has it. It came in handy once when my brother and I were dropped off before sunrise one Mule Deer Hunting day up near Bonaparte Lake in the Okanogan country of eastern Washington. The plan was for us to Hunt til 11:00 A.M. when we were supposed to be be picked up and returned to camp for lunch. In other words we had no grub with us. Well along about 5:00 P.M. we still had not been picked up and we were mighty hungry and cold. My brother decided to shoot some Brook Trout in the creek we were waiting by. Two shots and we had four Brook Trout and soon had them cleaned and over our small fire. Apparently the shock wave from the 357 bullets caused a shock wave or "stunning" effect that rendered the Brookies unconscious. They tasted pretty good though and tided us over til the broke down Hunting vehicle was repaired and got to us, well after dark. IIRC I paid $95.00 for that newish Ruger pistol. Hold into the wind VarmintGuy Great story great answers guys. Love to think of things past. This story kind of rings with me. Friends Dad had a 4" Model 29 S&W and It was my holy grail as a kid. Local sporting goods/gunstore guy used to sell me .44's when I was waaaaay under age. He would ring them up and ask me how my H&R rifle was shooting HAHA. Buddies Dad would let me shoot it as long as I brought ammo. Any way shot it without ear protection many times but the first time i couldn't even believe how loud it was. Also I was confused about why it didn't sound like the Dirty Harry movies. I still lust after that 4" moderl 29. I've had a 5" 29 and currently have a 3" 629 but that 4" still evades me. Thank u for everyone sharing.

In 1966, when I was 16, I went to Fred Robertson's gun shop on Shiloh road in Corinth, Ms and bought (actually put on layaway) a brand new High Standard Dura-matic .22 with a 6 inch barrel. I paid it off with money from mowing yards. It cost a whopping $39.99 and it took me several months to actually get it. I still have it today. LOVE Hi-Standards. My Uncle is a long time handgun guy. I got him into rifles and he peaked my interest in handguns. I have a 1952 Supermatic Tournament that shoots far better than I ever could. I actually got it for an insanely low price. I swear it would be a hard choice for me if i had to choose between my Hi-Standard and my Model 66 no dash as my last firearm. I bleed S&W blue but man i love that Hi-Standard. Thank u to everyone who has contributed. I love this topic.

Thanx to everyone who has told their story. It interests me to no end. Buying a gun young is a ton of money to many. I know it was for me. Keep them coming super fun and interesting!!!!!!

A brand new 8 3/8" nickel 29-2 purchased in 1978 when I was a bit over 16 years old. At the time they were hard to find and when found were heavily marked up. I gave retail for it, $350 IIRC. It was my first handgun period and I still own it.

1970...was 18 years old..could "own" a handgun but thanks to the 1968 Firearms Act could not buy one...so my father signed for them...would that be a "straw purchase"?
Bought a blue S&W 4" Model 19 and a matching Model 18...
The 18 was traded to a friend in about 1974 when I found a 6" Model 53 .22 Jet with extra rimfire cylinder that I still have. It was my only .22 handgun till about 1991.
The 19 had 10K rounds of .357 put through it, went back to the factory for a rebuild and nickel job and then another 10K through it before it was sold in 1980 when I got into .38 Supers.... Only six rounds of .38 Special were ever fired though that gun....

I can't remember if the first one I bought was a Browning .25 (the Baby Browning) or a Ruger SBH in .44M..
I know the Browning was in late '67.. But the Ruger was either in '65-'66 area or some time in '70-'71...
Wish I still have 'em both..

First hand gun was a Colt Python. I paid 90.00 for this gun in 1964or 65. It was almost new. I still regret selling. Then I had to sell one to fund another. Hasbeen

I bought a new Ruger Bearcat for if I remember correctly $39.99 I was 16 at the time (72 now) Carried it a lot of miles and shot a truck load of stuff coons, rabbits, grouse, sparrows etc. More than I can remember. It still shoots "like a rifle" but the sights seem a little small anymore. At one time I told my wife to bury it with me, now not so much it will go to my grandson. --- Mel

In 1975 for $154 or $156 (can't recall which). Earned the money cutting wheat from OK to WY. That is mow mine started out, 7.5". I bought mine in 1977 and I believe I paid $169 for it at the hardware store in Sidney, MT. I like the look of yours, but mine will stay as it came from the factory until a grandkid gets it. Mine came from a drug store in Enid, OK of all places; it's amazing how many places used to sell firearms.

1978 - I bought a new Colt Trooper MK III 357 Mag, 6" barrel. I promptly put 100 rounds through it without any ear plugs and went deaf, too.
I shot that gun until it was worn out (had to replace the MIM trigger in it twice, and it eventually went out of time so badly I got rid of it). I replaced it with a S&W 586. Colt didn't use MIM way back then. The process for the Mk III was sintered metal casting, and they changed to investment cast with the Mk V action.
