338RCM.
You can still buy factory ammo and get your hands on brass. The case design is my favorite of the three...no rebated rim.
I enjoy handguns and I really like shotguns,...but I love rifles!

Yeah but I'd have to open my bolt face up and thus be stuck w/the RCM size if I ever decided to rebuild. powdr

Dimensions from Hornady manual.

338 Federal if building a Short Action , always can find 308 brass when the other brass may be questionable

Been there, done that.
338RCM.
As others have mentioned, commercial loadings and brass are available. Over the past few years, I've gravitated to calibers that I can buy ammo and brass for. I reload most everything, meaning a lot of centerfire rounds. That said, I'd rather spend time filling cases and seating bullets, than forming cases.
Not a Ruger fan, but bought one of the SS/Syn Hawkeyes when they first came out. Trigger left a lot to be desired, and Ruger's version of the 3 position safety didn't thrill me either. Sold the Ruger and landed a M70 SS WSM for a donor. Rebarreled it with a Rock Creek S/S #3. Did nothing to the bolt face of the donor. Feed and function was never an issue. Shot very well, and ballistics were better than those published for the Ruger. In the end, it went down the road when I thinned the heard a bit. Had every intention of using it, but alas, it was a safe queen.
BTW, if you go the 338RCM way, PM me, I've some left over ammo and dies that I'd deal with you one.
I never thought I'd grow up to be a grumpy old man, but I did, and I'm killin' it.

I thought you just bought a 338 Federal. Not happy with it?

I'd do a .338 WSM. Just because I want one. You can find 300 or 325 brass to work with.

.338 WSM. Larger case capacity for the larger .338 bullets and way more common parent case.

Scott, I did but am looking at some other short 338 cartridges. Got a 722Rem I'm thinking about re-barreling. Just kinda thinking out loud. powdr

You probably already know this, but your 722 is likely going to need more than just a re-barrel to work with any short mag.

Yeah Kawi, one of the members said he could fix me up w/some RCM brass if I went that direction and that's what I'm really leaning towards. I know the bolt face will need to be opened but I wonder if I'd have any feeding issues. powdr

Trade it for a long action. The 338 Win.Mag is pretty hard to improve on.
Its all right to be white!! Stupidity left unattended will run rampant Don't argue with stupid people, They will drag you down to their level and then win by experience

I'd only consider one of those three if starting w/ a short mag action of some kind cuz any one of them will require potentially exorbitant feed rail mods.
I'd look at it like this: 338 Ruger is a short action 338-06 & the other two wildcats. I'd go w/ the WSM since cartridge availability won't likely ever be an issue & the bigger case will yield a best ROI on inevitable feed mods capacity-wise.

Trade it for a long action. The 338 Win.Mag is pretty hard to improve on. This! Had the same question some time back. I built the 338 WSM. Nice for a short action you don't know what to do with, and if you want to build a super light mountain rifle.

Yeah Bob, deep down inside the 338WSM has been my huckleberry for a while. Just wondering what mods my action would need to make it feed. powdr
