The family and I are looking for some place to go for 4-5 days for a quick vacation before school starts back. I've spent some time in RR, but never Branson. The kids are 5 and 9. I don't know what all there is to do in the summer in RR, but I've found some Jeep rentals and rafting. There's Silver Dollar City and a other stuff in Branson. What am I missing in Red River that we could spend some time doing? I'm sure there's fishing, but anything much outside of that?

Love Red River, Eagle Nest...we love to take day trips to Taos, Raton, Chama. St James motel in Cimaron, Cumbres & Toltec RR in Chama. All my elk hunting is in that area...its magical to me.

Hiking trails out the wazoo in and around RR. Taos is a great town to spend time in too. We camp outside of Cimarron and I can point you to some really interesting hikes, places to camp, fish and things to see just north of town if you dont mind 25 miles of good dirt road (good by New Mexico's standards) some of which passes thru Turners Vermejo Park Ranch. We always see elk up there. Shoot me a PM before Friday though, I'll be off the grid after that for a week or so.

Did Branson once in the summer 25 years back or so, and once in the winter on one of those time share sales pitch deals about 10 years ago. They'd have to pay me much money to ever go back again.

If you like Music shows, go to Branson. If you don't go somewhere else. I hate Branson with a passion, my folks love it and go a couple times a year.

Could also do a Carlsbad Cavern/White Sands/Ruidoso trip. I remember the Carlsbad trip was pretty cool when I was a kid....

For what it's worth, I've never been to Branson and I have a standing order with my wife and kids that if I ever mention going there or have the urge for a visit I am to be summarily shot!

I have been to Red River, Taos, Angelfire, etc. and I would never pass up another chance for a visit to that area of the mountains!!!! It's nice!

Deer whacker! I remember my family visit to Carlsbad too! 1965!!! A great trip!

Red River. Take a spin up to Cabresto Lake. That'll raise the hairs on your neck. Valley Vidal is awesome too.

Red River for the cool mountian air if nothing else. There is something going on there just about any weekend. If not, rent a Jeep, book a tour, travel to Taos and raft the river, or just simply take a step back in time and wander the street there in Red River.

As a side note, The Edelweiss is a nice place to stay. Has a nice pool for the kids and is walking distance to main street and the shopping.

p.s. Wife says Condo #1 is the place to stay at the Edelweiss.

Actually I would rent a houseboat and float, drink beer and bass fish if I were going to the Branson area. I am heading to that part of the world next month and Branson is not on the visiting list.

Definately have some Throwed Rolls at Lambert's Cafe and visit the Bass Pro shop in Springfield.

We're about 180 miles from Branson and have been there more times than any of us can remember. There's a lot to do there. More than you can get done. The downside is a lot of traffic and crowds.

Take camping gear, and climb Wheeler Peak - there's a couple days.

Never been to RR, but skip Branson. The little boys won't like it that well, and I doubt you will either. It's just a place to say that you've been there, not a fantastic destination.
