Gonna get me a pair of these in a couple months when their old enough. Anybody have any experience with them? Their 7/8 Sarplaninac, 1/8 Maremma. No sheep here, their from a line that is more social, want them for yard dogs. And yes, I've plenty of room for them.

The vet my wife works for owns the mom and dad. I went and checked out the pups and the dogs yesterday. The mom is a real sweetheart, dad was a bit standoffish. Of course she was with us, dunno how it would have gone over otherwise. From what I've read these and others like them are bred specifically in lines for different tasks. Some for stock protection, some for people/property protection, and some for fighting. The breeding pair mine are coming from are sheepdogs, but the mom is social the the owner believes these'll fit the bill for what I want.

I don't need or want some kind of badass fighting dog, just something that'll deter things from coming in my yard I don't want in my yard. I love german shepherds, I got really lucky on my male, conformationally and temperament he was awesome. But he's closing on 10 years and showing his age. And to get another that fits my bill I'd be paying big $$. And the wife is less of a fan of the GSD than I.

The temperament of the breed is described as independent, reliable, protective but not snappy, incorruptible and devoted to its master. The breed is aloof with outsiders, and calm until a threat to the flock presents itself. The breed has an extremely protective nature. In the absence of a flock of sheep, the Šarplaninac will often treat its humans as sheep - herding them away from danger or undesirable areas. They are serene and majestic, gentle with children and smaller dogs. They are also highly intelligent and bred to work without human supervision while guarding the flocks in the high pastures. Young pups can kill small animals until trained not to hunt.

Like many of its cousin Mountain dogs, the Šarplaninac is a very serious and dedicated guard dog. Due to this, they are naturally suspicious of strangers and will need good socializing at a young age to lessen this innate personality trait. They are calm and gentle with their family but when faced with danger they become a formidable foe, not a suitable breed for all. Consistent and firm training is essential to ensure compliance

I'd been looking at ovcharka's when this possibility raised it's fury head. I like the idea of knowing the owner of the dam and sire.

Hoping the fury is limited in scope. Furry however is undeniable.

Can't drink beer no more. Gluten free baby. Cider is actually cool. And gin. Lets not forget the gin.

I'm naming them Snot and Rocket.

That is generally reserved for melanistic pit bull owners. Since I am a gentle man, if somewhat aloof, I believe these pups will get along fine with me.

Been meaning to ask, is Clarke your married name?

He'll be fine. We added a female GSD and a female aussie about 7 years ago so he's not alone. The current dogs split their time twixt the house and outside. They sleep inside. The new ones will live outside exclusively. And if the old dog don't like it, he'll get his arthritic ass beat.

These aren't the first pups I've ever had. Nor am I an abusive owner. Truth be told I spoil the schit out of my critters, but that being said I've no tolerance for some behavior. And dogs ain't kids. Regardless how some people wish them to be so.
