We discussed this last year, why defective S-10 tailgate cables weren't part of GM's replacement program that only covered Silverado/Sierra tailgate cables.
Got a letter from GM this morning, explaining their new S-10 cable replacement program and the various options. Even covers previously-replaced cables that were galvanized (pre-August 2006). All OEM replacement cables are now SS.
Owners can either obtain new parts; arrange for dealer-installed replacements; or take trucks in for free periodic cable inspections. All options are free of charge. 'Bout friggin' time.
Only thing I noticed that needs more explanation, is that the letter only mentions 2002 model year S-10s, perhaps because mine was a 2002? Doesn't mention if it covers all '94 and up cables, since I think that's when the change to cables was made.
I had my defective cables replaced free in May '05, just prior to the expiration of the original warranty, have since swapped the ZR-2 on a GMC Sierra 4x4. Dealer told me that if the truck had been out of warranty, that job would've cost about $154, (due to design, includes replacement of latch assembly + cables).
