RR,

Your rifle is an 1899-A with the takedown feature. Murray lists 1909 as the intro of the TD but I have notes indicating that serials as low as 70,3xx was a TD. You have a very nice find. The 38-55 rifle in TD is a low quantity item.
I was at the same show and was about 30 feet too late.I did get to see it as it was bought. I will also be able to test it..:) At the same time I bought a marlin 94 in 25-20, a win 92 in 32-20. And a pair of Stevens favorites, Both dressend up pretty nice with full sights, one on 22 long rifle and the other rebarrelled in 38 special. They both have been redone but I just couldn`t leave them there.

It only takes one table to make it a good show.

I have a 1899A takedown in .38-55 with s/n 98,xxx (about 1910 vintage). I have a question: Never having taken this rifle down, I haven't a clue as to how to do it. Any tools needed, etc? Thanks for any suggestions.

Hello,

If you got a true take down it aint hard. Two styles of T.D models, full thread and interupted thread, both take down`s come apart the same. Full thread spins about 5 turns, interupted 1/2 twist. If it`s a take-down there will be a slide button on the fore-end,take off, open action, and twist barrel counter clock wise.
