Thoughts on Red Wing Shoes these days?? I'm thinking of something like these- http://www.redwingshoes.com/red-wing-shoe/88875-red-wing-shoes/88875-red-wing-mens-6-inch-boot-brownI'm having a hell of a time finding something comfortable lately. I wear prescription orthotics in my shoes so that complicates things. I've been wearing a New Balance 978 boot (a number of pairs over the last 6-7 years) and they were comfortable but only fairly durable. They discontinued the model I was wearing and the replacement sucks ass. I've bought and returned a couple different shoes recently and even tried on about a dozen pair tonight at Cabela's locally, nothing "works". Thoughts on the USA made Red Wings in general?

Im not sure on the Red Wing. I know the Georgia farm and ranch line are very comfortable and need very little break in.

I've had a pair of Red Wing Irish Setter Elk Stalker 200 gram thinsilate (sp?) for about 4 years. Very comfortable, very durable and warm. Would have to give them two thumbs up. I think, however, they were made in China, not positive on that and not at home currently so I can't check, little to hot for 200 gram thinsilate in Texas right now.

You can't get any American made shoes with glued-on soles. The EPA outlawed the only glue strong enough to hold. Only sewn or nailed on soles can be made here. I got that from a Danner rep when they went off shore with many of their boots.

I've been wearing red wing's for years. I only buy the American made ones. I have a pair of 4418's that I've been wearing for four years. I oil them with obenaufs leather regularly and they are still in good shape. I also have a pair of 4410'a and 2233's. They are really comfortable and hold up in the gas/oil field. I also have a pair of red wing heat moldable insoles. Best insoles I ever had.

I agree on the Georgia Farm and ranch, I wear the G6503. My last pair of RedWings 606 kill my feet on concrete. I tried all kind of insoles in them. The G6503 will not work with othotics b/c of a special made insole.
Im on concrete 10 hours a day.

Bought two pair of Thorogoods a while back. Made in USA and quality is as good as Redwing high-end boots (at $100 a pair less than Redwing). I replaced the insoles they came with by putting in some 3/4 insoles. More room for my toes and less rubbing on the top of my foot that way. The link that was provided above has some good prices.

If you have to wear custom insoles, I would call nicks or whites custom boots in spokane. They build boots to YOUR foot.
I would not buy something that runs on any kind of primer given the possibility of primer shortages and even regulations. In fact, why not buy a flintlock? Really. Rocks aren't going away anytime soon.
