I would look for an O.D. instead of an M.D.

Doctors of Osteopathy are trained both for traditional medicine like and M.D. but also are trained for skeletal manipulation like a chiropractor. Best of both worlds!

Miles,
Kidney stones are not usually relieved by standing still, and there is no position that relieves it until the stone(s) passes.

Form what you describe it does seem like neurological type of pain, which is exacerbated by moving or straining certain muscles/pinching nerves.

Sciatic nerves run down the legs, and can give tingling sensation or excruciating pain. It happens when the upper hip joint pinches the nerves exiting the spine.

The only thing that does not fit is the relieve with urination, but that could be related to a large bladder adding to compression.

You do need to see a GOOD internist to rule out what could be causing it and either treat or derive you to the needed specialist... not bounce around a bunch of different specialists trying to find a cure.

When you are a hammer everything looks like a nail, and something may be missed.

Don't try antibiotics just because. H pylori can give you awful pain, but it is usually associated with feeding or NOT feeding and does not radiate down, although could radiate to the back.

Best of luck and let me know if I can help in anyway, at least running interference for things that don't make sense smile

I herniated L4/L5 and had pain in my lower back, mostly on the right side. My internist sent me for an MRI and that is how it was diagnosed. Fortunately for me the disc blew straight out the back, after diagnosis I was referred to a spine surgeon who told me that surgery would not be necessary. I was referred to Physical therapy which included traction, exercises and hot/cold therapy. Before it was all over the sciatic nerve became inflamed necessitating a cortizone injection. Eventually I recovered and have had no problems since. Sometimes the symptoms of disc problems can manifest themselves slowly, not all can be connected to a specific incident. You need to see an M.D. and get an MRI in order to get a definitive diagnosis and a treatment plan. The sooner the better, I would not mess around trying to self diagnose/medicate, nor fool with a D.O. or chiropractor. Your back is like your eyes, you only get one set of eyes and only one back. Once messed up it can mean a lifetime of discomfort.

Lots of opinions. Need facts and focus which a good doctor will provide. Seems to be overlap between systems, so focus and priorities are critical to finding the cause and solution efficiently with a minimum of procedures and in a timely fashion.

What do you have against self-healing using Mexican sourced pharmaceuticals?

RE the pain, obviously I agree about seeing another doc with some more xrays etc...

And if all seems clear, my next stop would skip the chiro big time and go straight to acupuncturist. Have had more relief in the family with them by far than chiros over many years, but I'm talking pain issues not just a bad back or pulled muscle.

Everyone seems to have a story that may or may not be the same or even similar to the OP's case.

Lots of treatments proposed.

What is needed is a diagnosis.

Diagnose THEN treat...

With the exception of DF and Sponxx, everybody must have stayed at a Holiday Inn last night.

That comment provides NOTHING useful - but adds some wisea$$ criticism of those trying to provide advice and help in response to a request. Some folks have suggested referral to expert doctors for diagnosis - others have suggested assessment and possible treatment through proven alternative medicine. Some have merely noted their experiences. What did you offer?

Miles-, the above was a joke. Kinda. But really I do pain management injections both diagnostic and therapeutic for neck and back problems with the often accompanying radicular symptoms; that is, pain, numbness, weakness running down either the upper or lower extremities.

It's true that with the exception of relief at urination, the rest of your symptoms sound like a "sciatica" which is a commonly used term for pain down the legs (usually the back) with the source being "pinched" nerves in the lumbar-sacral spine. It's not impossible that a full bladder could figure into irritated lumbar or sacral nerve roots but that would be unusual and...

This cannot be done on the Internet. At the face value of your OP I'm surprised the doc you saw didn't get an MRI (or CT depending) or strongly recommend you get one when back home. I recommend you follow that up. What it ISN'T could be more important to know than what it is.

I'm waiting on those injections right now for herniated discs, and I can tell you that gas, and or constipation, increases my pain by a bunch.

I can see where a full bladder would act similar.

I had two bouts of severe middle back pain about 10-12 years ago. Ended up in the hospital emergency department on morphine both times. Morphine only just took the edge of the pain too!

The doctors never established what it was and over time it disappeared and never returned, although for a few months after the last episode I had a slight tingle in my back, but not bad enough to worry about.

Now, looking back, I suspect it was a pinched nerve.

I can't think of any event that happened to cause a strain that would cause this pain.

Can be something so simple as turning your torso while keeping your legs in front of you when exiting a vehicle. wink Have someone press on your back about the location of your kidneys. If the area is as hard as a rock it's muscular. BTDT in the past. Flexeril helps. My issue cleared up when I started using our wellness center doing core work and weight machines.

I've also had the pain start up when spending a lot of time on my feet at work and the inserts in my safety shoes are shot.
