I just got my first at lower. I'm thinking of building a 6.5 grendel with a 16 or 18 inch barrel. What manufacturer do you recommend for barrels and bolts?

I have always heard good things about JP. I have used their stuff for .223 and .308 and been very happy. Lilja makes 6.5G barrels also. I would think a JP bolt and Lilja barrel would be a good start.

Depending on the purpose (mine was for paper and hunting), I'd look at AR Stoner from Midway. From what I read, the older ones can be a gamble. I have not had mine out yet, but the smith who put it together sent me a .65 MOA target after he sighted her in. http://www.midwayusa.com/product/22...ist-stainless-steel?cm_vc=ProductFindingbased on these reviews, it seems they have figured out some of their hit or miss issues.

Are you guys sold on the grendel as being a better battle rifle than the 223?

Also what barrel contour do you recommend. I don't want too heavy but I also don't want to give up too much accuracy...solid moa is good.

Neither are a battle rifle by definition. 6.5 is closer for sure. I hVe that 18" unfluted barrel I linked you. I like it. Seems like a good balance without being too heavy.

Are you guys sold on the grendel as being a better battle rifle than the 223? It's certainly a better long range cartridge. It's accurate (normally) and it has a heavier bullet with good ballistic coefficients. Battle rifle usually means a full power cartridge-- 30-06, 7.62x51 etc.

What's the "Grendel ll" chamber? Same as the 264 LBC?

What's the "Grendel ll" chamber? Same as the 264 LBC? IIRC the Grendel II chamber has a deeper recessed area on the face of the bolt. If you decide to buy a barrel you will need to know what the chamber is, or, better to just buy both barrel and bolt from the same source so there isn't any issue with that. Don't know about the 264 LBC. I imagine that was done to get avoid the Grendel patent and any potential issues there.

What is knock down power? Knock down power is what Mike Tyson has. And not everybody else has.

What is knock down power? Knock down power is what Mike Tyson has. And not everybody else has. Good use of the phrase. The bullets job is to penetrate and expand while holding together. Knock down power doesn't really play a role in terminal ballistics unless you are literally trying to knock down steel targets. What you are looking for with any cartridge to be used on game is a bullet that pairs well with its velocity. You want a balance between maximum expansion, penetration, and weight retention. With a good bullet, the 6.5 Grendel would be fine for medium sized game.

The 6.5 Grendel is the same as the 264 LBC, except the lead angle in the LBC has been changed. Yes, it was done when the Grendel was a proprietary ctg and this didn't violate the patent. Same way with the 300 Whisper vs. 300 Blackout. More info here: http://www.65grendel.com/forum/forum.php

Yes, I knew the LBC was a way around the propietary Grendel.
After reading dozens of pages on several sites yesterday, my conclusion is: the Grendel ll is PTG's response to a number of people who've had trouble chambering FACTORY rounds in the original Grendel. They changed the throat a wee bit. The LBC is supposed to have a more forgiving chamber also, so the Gren ll and LBC appear to be 2 peas, albeit created for different reasons.

So there is really no problem using 6.5 grendel ammo in a grendel 2 chamber?

You have alot of choices for barrels. Saami spec'd Chamber barrels. Lilja, Jp Rifles, Krieger, Bartlien, Lothar Walther, Black Hole Weaponry(now makes a saami spec'd chamber 18" or 20"), Criterion soon, Shilen. .264LBC barrels: Odin Works, Black Hole Weaponry, Underground Tactical, Satern Machining, Stoner Midway, brownells barrel, Palmetto State I'm sure I'm forgetting a barrel.
Type 1 and Type 2 came from Satern and PTG since its easier to sharpen a Type 2 reamer. Type 1 they use a .125 recessed bolt and Type 2 .136 IMO it's best to use a .136 bolt and Saami Chamber in a AR, if your building a bolt action either chamber is fine.
18" barrel something with a WASP contour will be fine or just a little heavier profile under the handguards is great too. If you don't want to spend a ton of money BHW is about the same price as the Stoner and better quality and they can shoot great.
Precisionfirearms makes the higher end barrels to and they have guarantee accuracy for there barrels. Example the Criterion barrels that's coming out they guarantee 3/4 MOA or better.
So it's up to you, Grendel is a great cartridge for the AR 15, will take Deer, Elk, Hogs, Speed Goats and so on.

Get a 8 twist Black Hole Weaponry .264 LBC barrel and don't look back.

What's the "Grendel ll" chamber? Same as the 264 LBC? Its similar but not the same. The 264 LBC has a .296 neck diameter but the Grendel II has .300 same as the SAAMI grendel. The length of throat is the same as the 264LBC .120in. The Grendel II seems to be one of the best configurations its shoots all the factory ammo without the drama. it just works.
