So I traded a for a Winchester 1895 flat side made in 1896 serial 3xxx. It's fully engraved. My question is the barrel is marked .30 U.S. So which caliber does that mean .30-40, .30-03, .30-06. I was told this gun is .30-03. But I'm not sure on that one. Any ideas I'll post photos later

.30 U.S. = .30-40. Think about it this way, if was made in 1896 would it be chambered for cartridges introduced in 1903 or 1906? Looking forward to pictures, lots of pictures! And by the way, welcome to the Fire. Pictures or it didn't happen, Campfire rules.

Being a flat-side it will be in 30-40. The 30-03 was not introduced in the Model 1895 till 1905. The other cartridges at introduction were the 38-72 and 40-72.

That was my thinking on it...I had already thought about the 1903 factor but the guy swore up and down that it was.30-03 even after I brought that fact up to him. So figured I'd throw the question out there and see...it's possible it was rechambered so it's off to the gun smith tomorrow and have everything checked out

If it was originally .30 US Army (30/40) it would be very difficult, if not impossible to rechamber the original barrel from 30/40 to 30/03 or 30/06. Being the cases are from two extremely different parent cartridge types.

Wow! What did the seller say about the engraving, did he say it was factory? I wouldn't have any idea but it sure looks like quality work. No chicken scratchin' there!

Definitely not factory....story goes the gun belonged to the guys dad. It was pretty run down so he had it stripped and then engraved some years ago...and it was left in the raw. My plan is to have the bluing done to prevent rust. And from there I'll hunt with it.

Quality engraving but not factory work. It appears to be someones project that did not make it to completion. Deserves a quality rust or charcoal blue job, wood appears to already have been refinished. If it were mine I would spend the money to upgrade the wood and add checkering.

Gunswizard I never stated it was factory engraved. In fact if you look several posts back I clearly state it definitely wasn't factory and sated that it was left in the raw after engraving 20 years ago...it was the decision of the owner to leave it that way and has been bare steel for at least 20 years...he passed but had several custom hand engraved guns all in the white. He collected engraving more than the guns
