There have always been stories in magazines about the all around rifle. How many hunters that hunt more than deer just own or use a single one?

Which magazine are you talking about?
I replace valve cover gaskets every 50K, if they don't need them sooner...

Which magazine are you talking about? I'm thinking back to several years ago. I haven't read a gun or hunting magazine in several years other than the American Rifleman and American Hunter. I'm thinking about simplifying what I have, dropping back to a couple of rifles and one safe.

I was for many years. A Winchester model 88 in .308. It was traded for a M70 in 7Mag when I got the Magnum fever in my mid 20's. I only had one deer rifle until my early 30's and it's been a slippery slope ever since. I'm at 13 now. I have 12 too many but enjoy most of them.

Maybe you should have posted this in the "combination guns and drillings: section?
But then again, those guys are loonies and usually own more than one of those too!

I am more or less in that category. I'm sure I'll acquire other rifles over the years (I'm younger than most on this forum) but I've always been more of a small game and bird hunter so I have gravitated towards shotguns instead of rifles.

Steelhead: I took a guy deer hunting once. He carried a 30-06 and double barreled 12 gauge loaded with buckshot. He said the shotgun was for "up close". I tried to convince him a 30-06 would kill a deer at 10 yards but he wasn't having it. He carried both from daylight til dark.

Can't imagine only one big game rifle, but if I only had one, it would be a 7-08, or 280 Rem(for anything I hunt).

A range of 7's might be practical, whereas a range of 30's may not? Plus a .458 of some sort.

I can't do just one but for my big game hunting a 30-30, 308, and 7mm Mag would suffice for anything I'm likely to do.

For many years I used my Rem 700 Krieger Custom '30ought6' for hunting and LR, but I won a Rem 700 AAC-SD last year in a raffle and used it last season (took a nice 8 point and 230# sow using same Barnes 165grn Triple-Shok bullet I ran in the '06 when hunting).
30-06 went back to being my 1K rifle pitching 175grnSMKS and sporting the Leupy Mil-Dot.

For most of my children's childhood I had one rifle, a model 70 270, in a Brown Precision stock. Could have, should have, stopped there, but the last decade has been fun. Down to one hunting rifle now, a model 700 SS mtn rifle, in 270!
