Nice rifle. I kind of favor the pre war R's myself. Looks like the eye relief on that scope is variable. Tom

Jim, you don't get this one.. though I may have another 99R rat shooter to sell off soon. Only need so many. grin

Mike, yep, that's original and darned near perfect case color. The other side of the lever does have a thin streak missing where it's rubbed off as the lever opens, but it's perfect except for that. And it's on a gun with a smidgeon of surface freckling on the left side... weird, but I love it regardless.

A little on the nice side, but I would still take it out and hunt it. Can't beat a pre war R for looks and handling. GW

Yup. While the rifle looks splendid the scope does look to have a bit of a droop on the back side. I'm thinking it's slightly less than a pound of trash. No matter. It's a great rifle and scopes come and go. You might talk to the "Brown Truck" folks about it but probably not worth the time.

Very nice pre war R. Will make a fine hunter. Stick a good Leupold
on top, find out what load she likes and head to the woods. cool

Rory, That's a great looking rifle, no Rat in my eyes. Would you mind offering it as an example of "what to look for when a gun is reblued"?

I would look at your pictures and think, "It looks too good for it's age, both wood and metal, but doggone it, it could be a really clean original!".

I see how sharp the corners (metal and wood) are and the stellar unmolested case color on the lever, all evidence of a prized low-milage rifle, kept in pristine condition. But then there's the D&T and downhill Tasco scope...

What say You Collector Calhoun? Original or reblue?

It's definitely original. It has just a tad bit of pitting that got through the blue, but I'll somehow learn to live with that.

I've actually got a small collection going of high quality 1941 rifles now, don't know if the owners never came back in 1945 or if they just never had the urge to hunt after WW2. The guns were set up for hunting (Lyman Alaskan/Stith, Weaver 330/side mount, 99RS with field wear), but tucked away with very little use. This one was obviously d&t much later than 1941 but also obviously not hunted much in the 40's.

Click for full sized in case you want to keep it as a reference to 30's/40's blue and case color:

Before you ditch that scope, might try viagria rub on it. Haven't tried it but Longbeard says it works. GW whistle
