The "charts" are not the full picture. Remember there are 93 million out of work and 50 million on food stamps. The labor force has shrunk since 2007.
Also the labor force participation rate is at a 40 year low - 63%. Wage growth is stagnant as well. Really? maybe we should make these companies guarantee jobs for life. make some laws. redistribute wealth. I knew you sucked at economics, but I didn't know you were such a commie. Workers relying on what got them by 30 years ago are going to get discarded. The argument here was that manufacturing has cratered in the US. That's faux news BS. Productivity and output have grown. Workers looking to keep a menial buggy whip job in this economy are getting darwinized. Those that are smart and look ahead, will make money off of it. What? What are you talking about? It isn't a lesson on protectionism, it is a lesson on ass backwards protectionism and the mercantilism being practiced against us.
The idea of real protectionism is to allow for the free import of all commodities in order to cheaply supply you industry. THEN, you have tariffs on imported manufactured goods in order to protect that industry from foreign competition. Instead, we do the exact opposite and wonder why our industry moves offshore where production costs are cheaper and they face no penalty in bring manufacturing goods back to our consumers.
At the rate things are going, the United States is going to be nothing but a source of cheap raw materials for the rest of the world's industry. That's golden. I hope everyone else recognizes that gold. Rules and regs are part of the problem too, but this is basic.

Since they passed NAFTA 20 years ago 60000 manufacturing plants have closed nation wide.NAFTA alone cost us 900000 manufacturing jobs.
I just cant see how being able to buy cheepchit at wally world is worth it.
I want a government that fights for every job.
The only one I see running for president, even talking about it, is Trump.

But the bigger picture is that there are fewer people producing more goods. Again, there are 93 million out of work with a 40 year low in the labor participation rate. You can't look at just one chart/graph and come up with the overall picture. Good point bigwhoop. Fewer people are producing more goods. And the reason is technology. I do not have data, but from working in the industry for 30 years, I can tell you that technology in the form of automation has caused many production workers to loose their jobs. Too many people want to blame outsourcing to forien countries for job loses. This is ignorance (not necessialy intentional) in my view. There is a big push for enrollment in STEM coursework. Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math. This is where the jobs are. If the work force is not willing to follow the demand, then they need to be prepared to see their jobs leave...or do as the "Real Americans" do...and don't eat Oreos. Just because the US can produce cookies, or pencils, or underware...doesn't mean it should. But, Adam Smith does a better job of explaining that.

Then fix the other problems. miles I agree with the premise of what you are saying. There are practical aspects that hinder our goals. 1. Able bodied Citizens who do not work... vote. 2. Building prisons to house those who will surely turn to crime after loosing welfare benefits will most assuredly be more costly than the benefit. 3. I'm not sure the US can round up 13 million plus illegal aliens...without setting up some type of system that resembles gestapo check points.
