Im looking for a good load for a bolt action .223. 1 in 8 twist 22" barrel. I have a bunch of hornady 55gr,sp.bullets. Reloading supplies are 80mi away. Any tips will be appreciated.

The 55 Hornady has always been a pretty accurate bullet for me.
My two favorites are 26 grains of ramshot TAC or 25 grains of Hodgdon Benchmark. TAC may prefer magnum primers
Best of luck

My accuracy load is the Hornady 60 gr V-Max and 26 gr of Varget, Rem 7.5 primers. This the load I use in all my 223's.

Its so fast I can't even see the bullet...... Actually I don't know...its a couple grains under max....he asked for accuracy, not speed, so I offered up what I hope is the way to go. It usually works pretty good in any rifle Ive tried it in.

I try to stick with the basics, they do so well. Nothing fancy mind you, just plain jane will get it done with style. You want to see an animal drop right now? Shoot him in the ear hole. BSA MAGA

Aside from the powders already mentioned, I would definitely give around 22 grains of Accurate LT-32 a try.

My accuracy load is for an older Ruger 77 mk II RL, long sold, and beyond book max today though I got it out of some manual or other at the time.
I was loading a 50 grain Hornady SX over 27.5 grains of H335 in WW brass. I think, but can't swear, that was with Fed 205 primers. 1990-ish .. I've forgotten a few things.
Primers were real damn flat ... but then, that seems to be the nature of Ruger bolt faces. Case life was fine, 15-20 firings at least, and case loss was from neck splits, not primer pocket issues.
Out of that ultralight rifle, with a 2.5-8X Leupold, it'd shoot under .4" for 5 shots at 100 yards very consistently.

Aside from the powders already mentioned, I would definitely give around 22 grains of Accurate LT-32 a try. The LT30 I tried 'twas a tad bit better with the 55's in velocity than LT32, but the 32 still whumps ass with the 50-52. Both damn good powders for accuracy.

Another vote for 27gr of H4895. I shoot that charge with a 450 primer and 53gr Vmax.

I've tried about a dozen powders in my .223's. Best groups were with
LT32 TAC IMR4895 H335.
CCI 450's with the TAC and H335.
CCI 400's with the LT32 and IMR4895.

You might consider heavier bullets for competition, so that the wind doesn't blow them around.
Years ago I found that I could get exceptional accuracy in an AR-15 with 24 grains of Varget and the Sierra 69 grain MK, the 77 grain MK, the 80 grain MK, or the Hornady 75 grain AMX. I never saw any reason to change or try anything else.
Incidentally the latter two cannot be seated deep enough to fit in the magazine but are OK for single loading (600 yards). My twist was 1 in 7.7.
Don't blame me. I voted for Trump.

This is for a gas gun, correct? That might matter some. That said, I've had consistent excellence in several rifles with the 60 grain VM on top of 26.1 Varget, Lake City "detailed" brass (not turned, tho), set off with either WSR or CCI 400s. The Varget needs to be charge-weighed but these are for "special" shots.....

It should not need to be weighted unless you are top end max or you did not run an audette test.
I"m thinking 26.1 with a 60 is pretty top end.
I would not use WSR thoguh.....CCI 400 or others ok, but not the soft winchester ones.
We can keep Larry Root and all his idiotic blabber and user names on here, but we can't get Ralph back..... Whiskey Tango Foxtrot, over....
