When it comes time to put down the tools, or gloves or keyboards or whatever you do, where would you like to spend your retirement doing more fishing, hunting and general outdoors stuff?

What area do you live?

And the answer to your question is Tassie.

Im in Canberra. Nice place but Id like to retire in the Aussie Alps somewhere for the trout and deer

If I had my druthers, I'd spend my summers and fall in Saratoga, WY and the winter in Florida somewhere.

Custom 57, Welcome to the Fire. Although there are a few miscreants here, I can't think of a single one from down under!

As fare as retiring - I'll probably stay right here in SW Idaho - moved here in 97 from AK. Built the new house in 07 as a single level and even put in the high-seat toilets in anticipation of growing old here. smile

There are many beautiful places, but I like to have a comfortable home base from which to travel. More offerings here than I currently have time for, but looking forward to the day that changes - in about 10 years. A small cabin somewhere within 4 or so hours might be nice.

I have worked in sun city az for years, a del webb community for retirees, as a lot going for it. People move out here from wherever to play golf do whatever, leaving family, roots somewhere else. works for a while, they they get older, one dies, or they need help. family etc are in northern michigan. Happens all the time.
and women have issues, most women, with the grandkids on the other side of the country.
then there is the travel cost, upkeep, worrying about the property etc. All of these things enter into it.
We were first invaded on prescott many years ago and a lot of people bought these really nice homes on the edges of town with a couple of flights of stairs. Works good until you can't do the stairs anymore, then it's time to the flatland of sun city.
Arizona is very hot in the summer, nasty in the winter, lots of wind, lots or things that will bite you, eat you, stick you, dehydration walking down a couple blocks from your house, mexicans, californians, which are worse than the mexicans, and did i mention hostile natives, like navajo, zuni, hopi, gila, apache, and so on. Did i mention pancho villa?
everybody here says colorado is a better choice. And we got a lot of mormons too.

How about down under with y'all? Actually, I looked at NZ and for an American to retire in NZ is expensive and darn near impossible.

Welcome to and from we at the Fire!!

6 feet under

I have made some very bad investments threw out the years.

My most costly a Patent that did not go any where $80,000 worth of no where.

and now after being an Inspector for the past 26 years I can not get a decent job. All of the new kids are taking them.

So 6 feet under will be my retirement.

one can always retire, one just has to be happy with the choices in front of them.
I have clients that are very happy, do what they want to do.
they have expectations inline with what they have.
They are not spending part of the year in europe.
you also have to be in an area that is condusive to retirement i.e. not high tax, high cost of living. They are out there.

Alaska and I hope to be there in 5 years. Who knows when I'll retire tho. Way too young for that.

Alaska is where I need to be.

Northwest Arkansas is awfully nice, if you don't worry about the twisters every spring.

I am happy where I am, but we passed through a lot of cool places in Idaho and Montana on vacation this year that would be pretty nice, less crowded, and less susceptible to encroachment.

I would love to be in Northern Maine or New Hampshire from May until Christmas and in Sicily for the remainder of the year. But Wife likes the beach and I still like her so God only knows. smile

Costa Rica is my thought exactly but likely impossible without divorce coming up in the conversation. More likely destination is Asheville, NC.

I worry about crime, the quality of health care, and the other endemic problems you're likely to face in most 3rd World Countries.
