As I approach my 70's, I have been informed that I will soon be a grandfather. As a result of that I have been considering a .22 rifle for that grandchild that my daughter or son-in-law could use to teach that child safe gun handling skills. After some mulling it over I have decided to purchase a CZ 452 Scout model and keep it as a safe queen until such time my grandchild is old enough to learn to shoot. The truth is that I may not be around to see that day. What say you about that rifle? Do I still have to buy a trigger kit for it? Thanks...

Wouldn't worry about a trigger kit for it. A good trigger isn't needed for hitting pop cans @ 20 yards. Let'em have fun with it and if their serious let their parents buy a new one.

It's what my brother used with his son who is a fine and responsible shooter. Don't discount shooting it a bit too. They're surprisingly fun for adults.

Pick up a Yo-Dave trigger kit for about $25. It will give you an excellent trigger with no creep. I really like the 452 platform and the Scout is an excellent choice. You can look into all the options at www.rimfirecentral.comthey have a section just for CZ's and stickies about triggers at the top.

Gary, Great and thoughtful choice. You're gonna make one heck of a grandfather.

I have a 452 training rifle....
it has 30,000 plus rounds down the barrel...
The trigger is just starting to get broke in...
with a 4 x 16 scope on top, its good enough to head shoot gophers out to 125 yds with Walmart Bulk ammo...
neighbor has a 452 for shooting pests in the yard ( its rural here)...its the Scout... he has a 1.5 x 4 shot gun scope on top, and a laser sight for pistols mounted in front of the stock, on the underside of the barrel...
he's in his 70s, but it sure is a very handy little rifle...
very durable and accurate rifle...

There may be a better youth 22 but I don't know what it is.

If I was buying for a 10-12 yr old boy, I would probably opt for the Ruger American Compact, which can be upgraded with an adult stock insert. That insert also can be low or monty carlo for a future scope. In as little as 4 years the 452 maybe too short. For a girl with gene pool likely to remain on the short side this might not be a consideration.
AS for 452, I have a 453, cousin model and that is a wonderful built and accurate rifle. A serious grown up gun, as are 452 and Ruger adult models. The 452 scout has been fitted with a adult stock by those who just like the short handy configuration. You cannot go wrong with any 452. BUT.
Two things. First, I would shoot the gun enough to determine there is no problem. These days, lemons are all to common from any maker. Second, this is a single shot gun, which is a good way to learn and potentially more accurate way to feed a round. I think any youth, I ever met, would appreciate a spare 5 shot magazine. I like the metal ones.

There may be a better youth 22 but I don't know what it is. fair enough. the Scout is nice.\ .22 Zastava youth model was the direction I went for the five year old Grand. looking back, a TC single shot .22 would have been nice for the youngster before it was discontinued. I think it started out at about $180 and maybe went up from there. the fact that they are learning gun handling techniques might be the key.

The most common complaint I've heard about the CZ rim-fires is their backward safety. Some people adjust to it just fine, others don't. Might be a problem for a kid shooting other brand rifles later on after learning to shoot with the backward CZ safety.

Agree with you about the safety but my nephew had no problems transitioning to his 7mm-08 Remington. I really liked the single shot and 5 shot mags that came with the rifle. Excellent first rifle for any child.

Today I put a wood stock Scout on layaway at Sportsman's Warehouse for $299. It was even nicer in person than online. Thanks to everyone for the counsel...

I put the YoDave kit in my 452 varmint. It's excellent and affordable.
