The Savage was Edward Savage, no relation to Arthur. He was part of a partnership with Henry Savage North. I have always wanted one of these Savage's even before I got into the
other Savage's.
It's a very interesting design, one of many introduced during the US Civil War with all the innovations in firearms at that time.
I has a cylinder that moves forward to seal against the barrel when fired, the lever retracts the cylinder and indexes it while cocking the hammer. There are toggle links behind the cylinder pin that move the cylinder back & then straighten to hold it forward. They also made rifles which are quite scarce.
The earliest version was referred to as the 'figure eight' because of the shape of the lever.
